Preservation Texas e-Newsletter

The Texas Legislature Needs to Hear from YOU!

For those of you who received our e-newsletter dated March 4, please excuse our typo in the subject line. The request to contact your state legislators comes exclusively from Preservation Texas.  PT is the only statewide organization dedicated to being the advocate for the historic resources of Texas. We advocate on behalf of our membership and local affiliates for actions by public agencies, private organizations and citizens to protect, restore, and insure economic benefit from historic building, places, artifacts and archives.

The Senate and House Committees in charge of the budget bills are finalizing their recommendations for state agencies for the next two years. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) needs your help to ensure the agency receives the budget needed to protect Texas’ heritage.

The Committees have shown support for the THC’s base budget and most of the extra funding items they requested, but more urging to compensate for the significant cuts made during the last legislative session, are critical. Because of these last session mandates, THC’s budget was cut by 50% and  47 staff positions were lost. In addition to a base budget equal to what was appropriated during the last legislative session, the Senate and House Committees are currently recommending the following:

-          Pend consideration of $20 million in bond funding for the Texas Courthouse Preservation Grant

               Program  until later in the session:

-         *    Provide half the amount requested by THC  for additional operating funds and staff positions;

-         *    Restore the remaining funds from the Texas Preservation Trust Fund for use in making grants

                across the state; and,

-            Provide funds for the agency to maintain their historic sites in the Capital complex, as well as

                 purchase needed equipment and vehicles.

Please call and email your legislators immediately, especially if they sit on the Senate Finance or House Appropriations Committee. Thank them for their support of the THC to date and please request the following items:

-          1. Full funding of THC’s request for an additional $3.6 million for operating expenses and at least 15 staff positions, and,

-          2. Ensure support for at least $20 million in bond funding for the Texas Courthouse Preservation Grant Program.
