Welcome to Spring!

Get ready for Triangle TRACKS' Spring Membership Drive, which kicks off April 19. Among the prizes will be four tickets to Carolina Ballet's presentation of "Sleeping Beauty" at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium in May and two tickets to NETworks presentation of "Beauty and the Beast" at the Durham Performing Arts Center in June. Stay tuned for more information on that. There are plenty of wonderful performances coming to our area this month as well. The 'Disney Live! Rockin' Road Show' is at DPAC April 3-4

Mickey Mouse arrives at DPAC April 3-4 for the "Disney Live! Rockin' Road Show" and he'll need a little help from the audience. Carolina Ballet Presents 'La Sylphide' April 1-4 and 'Romeo and Juliet' April 22-May 9

"La Sylphide", first choreographed in 1836, is one of the oldest surviving romantic ballets. It has enjoyed a revival in the last decade. Carolina Ballet breathes new life into this magical tale for its Raleigh premiere April 1-4. The program also features a world premiere by Tony Award-Nominated Broadway Choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett. Learn more here.

April 22-May 9 Carolina Ballet presents Shakespeare's classic love story "Romeo and Juliet." Countless have tried to improve upon the original Shakespeare story, but it can't be done. See the original classic performed as a ballet. Learn more here.

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble Performs at Sertoma Amphitheatre in Cary April 18


The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble performs April 18 at 3 p.m. at Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park. This talented group of high school musicians will play in both big band and small group combinations. For more information call (919) 645-8434 or click here.

N.C. Museum of History April Children's Events Cover Hats, Music and Boats

On April 6 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. children age 3 to 5 will enjoy trying on hat styles from the past, then decorating their own hat to take home at the N.C. Museum of History. Children ages 5 to 9 can explore North Carolina’s musical heritage at the museum April 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. by looking at traditional instruments and listening to their sounds. Then they'll get a chance to join the band.

On April 10 from 1 to 3 p.m., children can participate in a drop-in "Make It, Take It, Fold a Boat" program. They'll see the photography exhibit Workboats of Core Sound and make a paper model of a flat-bottom skiff to take home. Learn more about these events here.

The Ackland Museum of Art Hosts Drawing for Kids and a Family Fun Tour This Month

The Ackland Museum of Art in Chapel Hill will host Drawing for Kids April 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. During this event, which takes place the second Saturday of every month, 9- to 12- year-olds practice contour drawing, linear perspective, shading and drawing people. All materials are provided, but registration is required and limited. There will also be a Family Fun Tour for children ages 6 to 12 at the museum April 25 from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. Click here to learn more about both events.

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham Hosts 'Molecular Magic' April 20 and a Kids Animal Event April 25

Join Dr. Ken Lyle and chemistry students from Duke University for "Molecular Magic" April 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. as they shrink objects, make water disappear and illuminate the room with chemicals. Learn the science behind the tricks. The cost is $8 for museum members and $10 for non-members. To preregister, call (919) 220-5429 extension 313.

On April 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. drop the kids off at a kids animal program and head over to the Science of Coffee event for adults. During the animal program, educators will entertain kids age 4-12 with a variety of animals and a behind the scenes sneak peak at some of the museum’s exhibits. Parents or guardians of children who are attending the Science of Coffee event may purchase tickets for this program. The cost is $5 per person. The 2010 Young Artists Exhibition Opens at Marbles Kids Museum April 3; 'Milk the Moment' Tour Stops by April 8

Visual Art Exchange has teamed up with Marbles Kids Museum to present the 21st Annual Young Artists Exhibition showcasing works of art by some of the most talented up-and-coming K-5 artists in Wake County Schools. Art will be juried and prizes awarded prior to the public opening of the exhibition. Learn more here.

And don't miss the Milk Mustache Mobile "Milk the Moment" Tour when it stops by the museum April 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to encourage families to drink more nutrient-rich milk. Enter the national "Milk the Moment" contest by sharing how you "milk the moment" with your family for a chance to win a trip to San Francisco and have dinner with a celebrity chef. Learn more here.

MOVIES

"Animalopolis" opens at IMAX April 7. Watch hippos graze, bears dance, sea lions turn somersaults, otters pray and other wonders of nature. "Animalopolis" takes a lighthearted and imaginary look at animals that race cars, run their own schools or attempt other amazing feats. 

"Oceans" from Disneynature opens April 22 at theaters nationwide (rated G). Peer beneath the surface of the sea into the deepest ocean beds to meet living fossils, sharks, swordfish and manta rays. Explore dens belonging to cod, monkfish, orange roughy and squid. 

EDUCATION

PAGE Super Saturday on April 10 Offers Challenging Classes to K-8 Academically Gifted Students

Partners for the Advancement of Gifted Education (PAGE) of Wake County will sponsor its spring Super Saturday event April 10 at Cary Academy on 1500 North Harrison Avenue in Cary. The event is for kindergarten-8th grade students and consists of courses covering a variety of academic subjects offered in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon and in the afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. Classes being offered this spring include Lego Robotics, Scrabble Club, Chess, IMACS, Dinosaurs, Egg Drop, Engineering on the Road and more. Some students participate in both sessions, while others attend whichever session fits into their schedule. Parent sessions are held as well and are free and open to the public. Learn more here.

Scrap Exchange April Workshops Feature Stuffed Animals and Sparkly Shoes 

bluebarrelsLearn to sew by creating unique stuffed animals for yourself or as a gift during the Scrap Exchange's Stuffed Animals workshop April 25 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Reuse fabric and other materials to make something new and beautiful.
