Dear Friend,

At the beginning of this month, torrential rains flooded Pakistan, affecting the lives of millions of people and submerging nearly 1/5 of the country under water.  BRAC's staff in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (formerly the North-West Frontier Province) temporarily froze our microfinance program in the flood-affected branches to respond to the emergency.  We've hired an additional 39 staff to do relief work in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan as well as Khyber-Paktunkhwa.

The response we received from our supporters was heartwarming, with contributions ranging from $2 to $200,000, enabling BRAC to provide food, health education and services, and access to clean water to more than 70,000 people.

But we need your help to do more. Every dollar helps, and 100% of your donation to Pakistan relief will go to our team on the groundPlease visit our website and donate now.

Best wishes,
Susan Davis

Pakistan still needs your help

BRAC staff in Pakistan pass out emergency food packets to women

The number of people affected by the worst floods in Pakistan that the country has witnessed in decades continues to rise as the scale of the disaster becomes more serious with every passing day.

There is a serious shortage of clean water, food, blankets, sleeping mats and health facilities for the affected people. BRAC Pakistan is actively engaged in emergency relief efforts for the flood victims in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan. BRAC branches have distributed more than 100,000 food parcels and oral saline sachets, benefiting almost 70,000 flood victims. An additional 3,400 households received a mosquito net, a plastic floor mat for sleeping on, and 1,000 rupees for house repairs. BRAC is providing emergency health care for four health camps that have been set up. So far, we have treated 10,650 people and vaccinated more than 600. BRAC WASH teams have also installed 39 water sinks and hand pumps, providing entire communities access to clean water.

BRAC and VisionSpring Bring Better Vision to the Poor in Bangladesh

Jhili is a single mother who lives in Bangladesh makes her living as a master embroiderer. As she reached her thirties, she started to suffer headaches and could not do her intricate work as fast and well as she used to. Her income started to decline and she started to fear for her children’s well being.

VisionSpring and BRAC started a partnership in Bangladesh to bring the simple yet necessary instrument – reading glasses   to the people at the bottom of the pyramid. BRAC has a unique network of over 88,000 community health volunteers (Shastho Shabikas) who are trained in managing common illnesses and in preventive healthcare. These women visit over 250 households per month providing basic healthcare services as well as selling healthcare products at small margins. This is an excellent way of bringing primary healthcare to the doors of poor people at the same time creating economic livelihood opportunities for the health volunteers.
