by Zena Habi - CoFounder Fitness O2

The days are getting longer, the weather warmer, and there’s a whole lot of activities you can do to get fit and in shape for the summer.

Do you dread the very thought of going for a jog, but force yourself to do it simply because you've no other ideas for exercise? Stop right there:

Exercise is an enjoyable activity, especially when you find the form that is best suited for your personal preferences.

Just like hairstyles, exercise routines quickly become outdated. That is why the best routines are dynamic, and the worst routines never change. So how do you know when your routine needs to be updated? You'll know how effective your routine is by the results, or lack there of, that you experience. If you feel that you are simply going through the motions then stop wondering about the effectiveness of your routine and start doing something new.

If you don't like exercise there is a good chance that your technique needs help. We pride ourselves in showing my clients the fun side of exercise, yes, exercise is fun!

If your routine includes all of the above then congratulations – you are doing it right. You're consistent, you challenge yourself and you're seeing results. However, if your routine doesn't include the above, you now have the blueprints to do it right.

Want a routine that incorporates everything you need to reach your fitness goals? Call or email today to set up a consultation and we'll show you how to get amazing results in less time than you think.

That’s all for this month guys!

How Not To: the Squats
by Hadi Hmayssi

Our focus in today's post is on the notorious, squat, an exercise many of us don't like, but a very important exercise in strengthening part of our core muscles as well as our legs, here is how not to do a squat:
  1. Your legs should not be very wide apart nor very close, the right distance is shoulder width
  2. Your hands should not be on your waist but rather crossed on your chest or extended straight in front of you to help you balance yourself
  3. During movement up and down, your knees should not cross your toe line meaning you go down with and not by leaning forward. The motion should be a straight up-and-down motion.
  4. Do not arch your back to the inside, look straight ahead with your chest up, shoulders to the back, stomach to the outside and your bottom pushing outside as you go down.
  5. Do not go all the way down; your bottom should not go lower then your knees or you will put unnecessary pressure on the knees. You should make a 90 degree angle with your legs.
  6. Inhale going down and exhale going up
  7. Do not do it fast, the slower you go, the more resistance you create on the muscle this means better results. When going down, do it in 4 stages (4 seconds) and when going up do it in one stage.

What do you think of the squat? is it worth spending time making sure the technique is right?

That's Nutty

Recent studies confirm that nuts are an important part of a healthy diet. Nuts promote a healthy heart, improve digestion and help ward off cancer. Of course, nuts need to be eaten in moderation, as they are a calorie dense food. Incorporate a small handful of raw almonds into your daily diet, and reap the healthy benefits of nuts.

Why Should You Work Out: Part 1

iStock_000007651615XSmall.jpg

We decided to include each month a reason on why you should work out, here is this month's reason:

Strength Training helps increase your metabolism because muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat.  So the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn every day, not just when you are exercising.

Strength Training helps your bones. Research has found that weight training can increase spinal bone mineral density by 13 percent in six months. So strength training is a powerful tool against osteoporosis.
