Estimad@ Amig@ {FIRST_NAME},

The holiday season is upon us, and there is much to be thankful for.
However, not everyone is able to see the holidays as such a joyous time. Families simply struggling to get by may not have the luxury of buying their children presents or having a big holiday dinner.

Many families are grieving this season, with attacks and threats worldwide from ISIS, desperate Syrian families seeking refuge from the violence in their country, and the shooting of yet another black man, Jamar Clark, by Minneapolis police. These recurring issues highlight the fact that there is still much to be done in our world surrounding the topics of race, immigration reform, and prevention of violence.

As we remember Tamir Rice, shot by Cleveland, Ohio police one year ago on November 22nd, we hope for a clear path to police reform in the near future in our city. Click here to learn more about the Seattle Community Police Commission and learn how you can be involved in the discussion of police accountability.

dapa rally
(DAPA rally, 11/24/2015)
On November 20th, 2014 President Obama announced his plan to improve the U.S. immigration system by implementing DAPA, or the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, which would protect certain undocumented immigrant parents from deportation and give them access to short-term work visas. One year later, the plan is still being blocked by the U.S. Court of Appeals. El Centro de la Raza staff and supporters participated in the DAPA rally that took place in downtown Seattle on Friday, November 20th. Read an article about Seattle's involvement in the DAPA proceedings here. We need to continue to work together as a community to show legislators the importance of fixing immigration reform.

There is much to think about and much to work towards in our country right now. We encourage you to get involved by attending discussions, meetings, rallies, and writing to local and state officals about these important issues. Click here to let our senators know that you oppose legislation preventing refugees from Syria and Iraq from being settled in the United States. Let us join together as a community to advocate for justice.

Estela Ortega
Executive Director
