Estimad@ Amig@ {FIRST_NAME},

On behalf of the El Centro de la Raza community, mil gracias to everyone who attended our 10th annual Día de los Muertos celebration on November 1st! It was an honor to have you join us in our annual observance of the Day of the Dead. Mil gracias to our 31 community members and organizations that joined us in decorating the building with beautiful and powerful ofrendas in honor of our loved ones and the refugee children of Central America who have died from violence in their countries or on the journey to reach safety.

I also want to thank City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, 4Culture, Sysco, and KUOW for sponsoring our 10th annual Día de los Muertos celebration! We have estimated that approximately 1,200 guests were in attendance on November 1st for our opening night. Mil gracias to our in-kind donors Choke Shirt Company, Chuck Pinnell from Sysco, Hilltop Red Apple Market, and La Mexicana tortilla factory for making the dinner possible through their generous food and beverage donations!

In addition to a delicious dinner, the night was highlighted by spectacular performances from Mariachi Seattle Azteca, Lesley Rialto La Bruja, Duo Finelli, Folklore Mexicano Tonantzin, Irma La Jaliciense, Danza Tumbi de Tzintzuntzan, and Quichua Mashis. Thank you performers!

Our ofrenda exhibit will continue through November 20th and it is open Monday-Friday, 10:00am-6:00pm. Groups, please RSVP to 206-957-4605.

Estela Ortega
Executive Director

Thanksgiving Turkey Donation for La Cocina Popular Latino Hot Meal Program

On Monday, November 10th, 2014, Northwest Harvest Food Bank, a state-wide food bank distributer, delivered Thanksgiving turkeys to El Centro de la Raza’s Latino Hot Meal Program. Foster Farms donated 750 turkeys, which will feed up to 14,000, to Northwest Harvest. Shelley Rotondo, CEO of Northwest Harvest was at El Centro de la Raza on Monday and spoke about the current condition of food insecurity in the State of Washington. Even with generous donations like this, food donations in the State of Washington are low this year and impoverished families are unable to get food that they rely on. As you enjoy sharing meals with your loved ones this Thanksgiving, think about donating to a family in need.

The Latino Hot Meal Program at El Centro de la Raza, La Cocina Popular, provides free hot lunches every weekday to directly address hunger and poor nutrition among homeless and low-income families. There will be a walk in Thanksgiving meal on Wednesday, November 26th from 12:00-1:00pm.

There will also be Thanksgiving food for anyone in need on November 25th and 26th from 8:30am-12:00pm or 1:00-7:00pm in our Food Bank. Click here for other holiday meal options.

#GivingTuesday is a day to celebrate generosity and dedication to your community. As integral members of our community, participants here at El Centro de la Raza need your help! On December 2nd, give back to your community by donating here! Your donation puts food in the food bank, helps a family secure sustainable housing and employment, and empowers youth to attend college! Mil gracias for all of your support.

Sign the Petition for Increased Access to Affordable Dental Care

Last weekend, almost 2000 people from all over Washington lined up for medical and dental care at the four-day, free clinic at KeyArena in Seattle. Many of these individuals were unable to receive care because the clinic was at capacity. This is just another example of the amount of people who are in desperate need of routine and preventive dental health care in Washington. Due to this, there is currently a petition for increased access to affordable dental health care. They have 4,299 signatures so far but they have a goal of 5,000. You can help by signing the petition today! View the Washington Dental Access Campaign website for more information and click here to view the petition.
