Estimad@ Amig@ {FIRST_NAME},

Happy Holidays! Last Friday, December 12th, El Centro de la Raza joined together with friends and families for our 5th Annual Las Posadas and Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe event. Approximately 400 community members gathered at El Centro de la Raza that night to enjoy Las Posadas, pozole, pan dulce con chocolate, music, children’s activities, and a visit from Santa! Mil gracias to our wonderful performers A La Carte and Seattle Fandango Project for spreading cheer and to the teachers and children of our José Martí Child Development Center for leading the posadas.

A family enjoying time with Santa

During the holidays, it easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. While enjoying the festivities, it is important to take a moment to think about the many individuals facing adversities during this time. I hope that you will consider helping us in our efforts to spread love and joy to those in need. Each donation will support the children, youth, seniors, and families in our 44 progams and services. Visit our website to donate, volunteer, or learn how to get involved with our community. Mil gracias for your continued support.

2015 will bring big changes to El Centro de la Raza as we begin construction on Plaza Roberto Maestas (PRM) in March. Not only will PRM begin the expansion of our housing programs with the creation of 112 units of affordable workforce housing, but PRM will also bring an expansion of our award winning José Martí Child Development Center and expansion of our work around asset building and access to economic opportunity with the creation of our Business Opportunity Center (BOC). View our PRM website for more information.

We are pleased to announce that we recently received a grant of $300,000 from the Satterberg Foundation to help launch the Business Oportunity Center and pay for costs associated with the expansion of the Jos
é Martí Child Development Center and a $35,000 program expansion grant from Impact Capital to allow us to fund our new asset manager position. Mil Gracias to the Trustees and staff of the Satterberg Foundation and Impact Capital for their generous support for our programs and for sharing our vision of making Plaza Roberto Maestas a transformative place for the participants we serve and our greater community.

Estela Ortega
Executive Director

Tax VolunteersUnited Way is looking to recruit and train over 1,000 caring volunteers in order to serve 20,000 clients this year. Bi-lingual volunteers make an incredible difference by helping populations who don’t speak English make sense of the often confusing tax system and helping to get them all the credits they’re eligible for.
Two volunteering options are available:

1. Volunteer Intake and Benefits Specialists (VIBS) – VIBS help clients get paperwork in order and connect them to other financial services they may qualify for.
2. Volunteer Tax Preparers – All of our Tax Preparers are IRS certified to help clients complete their tax returns and ensure they get the credits they’re eligible.
