Estimad@ Amig@ {FIRST_NAME},

On Monday, February 22nd, applications were due for housing in Plaza Roberto Maestas. Approximately 424 households arrived to wait in line to turn in their application for the 112 units that are available. We estimate that this represents about 1,400 people who are interested in living at Plaza Roberto Maestas. Plaza Roberto Maestas was planned as a solution to a Seattle-wide need for affordable housing that’s driven many families to live further away from the city center. As demonstrated by the turnout here, Seattle is far from livable for many families, and unfortunately, there will still be families seeking housing after Plaza Roberto Maestas is filled. It is heartbreaking to know that we aren't able to house all of the families who walked through our doors on Monday. However, we are more determined than ever to continue addressing the critical need for affordable housing in Seattle.

Gracias for your part in supporting Plaza Roberto Maestas, whether by Buying a Brick, donating, or volunteering. We are thankful to have your continued support in offering services to all those in Martin Luther King, Jr. County seeking services as we continue to bring justice, dignity, equity and freedom to all peoples. Read an article from Crosscut about Plaza Roberto Maestas and the application acceptance day here.

Also on Monday, 47 El Centro de la Raza youth and staff traveled to the capital in Olympia for a day of workshops, conversations, and learning about the legislative process. In one of the forums, students were asked what they saw as the biggest current issues happening in their cities, which encourages them to be aware of current events and political happenings. Students responded that immigration, homelessness, and how expensive Seattle is becoming as the biggest issues surrounding the community.

Our youth have the power, energy, and awareness to make change and we are glad to have been able to go with them to the state capital.
