Elementary School Eagle on Top

The 2017-2018 school year still has 2 remaining quarters full of fun and learning to experience, but Horizon Honors is already planning for the next school year. I am often asked what parents should expect and the timeline for the transition from one school year to the next.
When students move from one multi-age group to the next, parents often have many questions or are curious about the differences in the program at the next level. Because of this we have scheduled transition meetings on Thursday, March 8th. These meetings are designed for parents. We will have transition meetings and activities for students in all grade levels throughout the 3rd & 4th quarter. All transition meetings for parents are on March 8th, and will be held in the MPR.
  • 8:15 - 9:00: Parents of 2nd grade children going into 3rd grade
  • 2:15 - 3:00: Parents of Kindergarten children going into 1st grade
  • 3:15 - 4:00: Parents of 4th grade children going into 5th grade
Horizon Honors’ classroom scheduling and placements begin during the 4th quarter for Kindergarten through 6th grade students. We make every effort to keep students within a multi-age group (in ½ or ¾) in the same classroom from year to year, however, some students do move to other classes. As you know, student placement is based primarily on academic peer groups and having students with a group that will properly challenge them. The placement process begins with teacher academic and social recommendations. This is why it is important to have these discussions with your child’s teachers during your 4th quarter ILP conference. This discussion will include math and reading level recommendations. Specific classrooms and teachers are not selected at this time. Preliminary lists are created and teachers review lists and continue to refine the new classroom groupings. This process continues throughout the quarter and into the summer months.
During the summer, classroom placements are finalized and you will receive information regarding your child’s schedule, classroom assignment(s) and an invitation for your family to “Meet the Teacher” day.
Please do not hesitate to call or stop by if you have any questions about this process.

Our Intermediate Student Council members asked Kindergarten,1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 to make little hands and little hearts, amazing hats and thoughtful cards for the seniors of our community.  Student Council then walked to Pecos Park Senior Center and decorated for the senior's holiday celebration.  When we were all done the Senior Center was very thankful for what Horizon Honors did for them. Check out some great pictures and video!
Deco for Valentines Day 2-14-18

Valentines Day 2-14-18

Kindergarten recently received their own Buddy Bench for their Kindergarten playground.  The Student Council Members surprised them during a morning meeting and performed a skit to help them understand what the Buddy Bench was and how to use it. The Kinder friends are working on developing questions to put on the bench to help them learn more about one another and make new friends!

The AZMerit and AIMS Science test are scheduled to be administered over 3 weeks in April to our 3rd through 6th Graders. We are SO EXCITED for our students to have the opportunity to show off what they know and how hard they have been working in school! We KNOW they are going to ROCK THEIR TESTS!
AZMerit tests are computer based and NEW this year: The AIMS Science test will also be taken on the computer.  Please do not schedule extended vacations or appointments during these weeks. Our goal is 100% participation. For more information about the assessments, click here.

By working together, we can make your child's testing experience positive and successful. Here are some suggestions to help your child prepare at home:
  • Successful test-takers tend to be students with good attendance, homework, and study habits; therefore, your child’s daily attention to homework and attitude toward school have the biggest impact on their overall school performance – which will naturally include the tests!
  • Students who struggle the most on testing days are the ones who didn't have enough sleep or a good breakfast the day of the test. Rest up and eat healthy foods!
  • Drink plenty of water - hydrate your body and brain!
  • Remind your child that they are AMAZING and have all they need to ROCK their test!
  • The Arizona Department of Education is a wonderful resource. Check on: for parent guides and sample tests

Have you downloaded the Horizon Honors app?

One important area in the app is called "Quick Tip." This is allows students and other community members to anonymously report a concern or problem to their school principal. Users can upload files, including photos/screenshots. Quick Tip is another important tool in keeping our community safe.

The app is available for both Apple and Android smartphones by searching for "Horizon Honors" or using the following links:
