SIT TEAM APPLICATIONS DUE THIS SUNDAY!
We invite you to be a part of the K-12 Horizon Honors Schools Improvement Team for the 2018-2019 school year.  We are taking a whole community approach this year to the Schools Improvement Team in order to discuss various school related topics by quarter this school year.  The purpose will be to discuss relevant topics that affect our schools, gather input from the team, and determine what actions can result from the discussion.  Topics will be announced prior to each meeting.  Community members are invited to attend some or all of the meetings, but we will hold a lottery to select "voting" team members should that action be necessary.

If you would like to be a "voting member" of the Schools Improvement Team, please submit your application by Sunday, August 26, 2018.  A lottery drawing will be held at the August 28 Governing Board Meeting.  You will be notified after the meeting of the lottery results.  One parent representatives will be selected for the following grade levels:

ART MASTERPIECE

BEGINNING SOON!

Art Masterpiece is a national art enrichment program that uses reproductions of fine works of art to promote art literacy in children.  Various artists are presented during the year to each classroom followed by a hands-on art project.

The Horizon Honors Elementary Art Masterpiece program is run by volunteers.  No art knowledge or experience is needed or required to present or help with the classes.  All projects are pre-planned and all art materials are provided.   Most of the class time is spent with the children working on their art piece.

We appreciate you taking the time to volunteer...it makes a difference!

If you have any questions, please contact Janet Dewan at janet.dewan@horizonclc.org.

MEDIA CENTER NEWS
unnamed (1)This week K-4th we read Penguin Day A Family Story by Nic Bishop.  Nic Bishop is an Author as well as an animal photographer.  It was fun to explore our first non-fiction book, of the year, with the students.  Nic Bishop has written many interesting books with beautiful photographs of all different types of animals.

We talked about borrowing books from the Library and how they need to come back.  Kindergarten students only get one book at a time, if they forget their book on Library day, they will have to wait until the following week to check out a book.  1st - 4th grade can have 2 "FUN" books or books they have picked themselves from the Library plus their 1 Literature book issued to them by their reading teacher.

Students who still have books from last year will not receive any books until over dues/fines are resolved.

Please contact Mindy Duet if you have any questions.

AFTER SCHOOL GROUPS FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
It has been our experience that children seem to cope better with struggles in their lives when they have the chance to share their feelings with others going through the same experience. Fortunately, your child has an opportunity at this time to participate in a group that will explore the issues your child may be experiencing.  Starting this quarter Mrs. K. (Kelly Maguire), our Student Advisor, will be providing groups for the various grade levels after school.  The focus of these groups is to help students learn how to express their emotions in a healthy way and understand their emotions and how to problem solve.  This can include children who have experienced or are experiencing divorce or separation within their family, students struggling to find friends and feel that they “don’t fit in,” for students who are experiencing hardship within their family - which may include financial hardship, loss of a loved one, exposure to a loved one with an illness or any other stress that is causing emotional hardship.  If you would like your child to benefit from this opportunity, please complete the form provided and return it to the Elementary Office as soon as possible.  Groups will begin mid 1st quarter and continue throughout the school year.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE FOR THE CLOTHES CABIN
The Elementary Student Council & Service Club will be collecting school supplies to donate to a non-profit organization called Clothes Cabin, once there, kids in need can pick up all of the necessary school supplies they need for school. You may donate items starting next week and all the way through the end of August. We are gathering items such as backpacks, lunch boxes, composition notebooks, pencils, markers, crayons, erasers, and much more. We appreciate your help and support! Go, Eagles!
