SPIRIT WEEK NEXT WEEK!

Our spirit week theme this semester is Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States.  This year's Red Ribbon theme is: "Life is your journey, travel drug free."  Red Ribbon Week will be addressed in the Morning Meeting slideshow and each student will receive a pledge card and natural highs materials to help celebrate the message.

NATIONAL MIX IT UP DAY

Horizon Honors Elementary has earned the label as a Mix It Up Model School for several years now because of the heart and philosophy of our program.  There is evidence of “mixing it up” at Horizon Honors each and every day as our students are asked to work together in their community in diverse groups that challenge them to get to know their peers and show respect.  Our values are embedded into our school culture and students are understanding and showing what it means to be a No Place For Hate School that embraces diversity.  This year Horizon Honors will be celebrating National Mix It Up Day on October 31st.  Mix It Up is part of our Spirit Week and for this Spirit Day, we will be supporting the mix it up theme this year of being your own superhero. Students will also take some time during lunch to reflect and celebrate all of the amazing ways we “mix it up” and take some time to get to know each other better as they share their "natural highs" (a natural high is an activity, art, or sport that you love to do and makes you feel good inside)  with one another.

TREATS FOR THE TROOPS

Elementary Student Council will begin collecting candy for our troops as part of the Soldier's Angels Treats for Troops Program, November 1st - 9th.  Each year we collect close to 500 pounds of candy to send to the brave men and women serving our country.  Along with our generous candy donation, we will also be sending notes of gratitude thanking those that choose to serve our country and keep us safe!

GRADES 5-6 DEBATE CLUB

On Wednesday, October 24th, the Intermediate School Debate Club held their first round of debates.  Each team showed a lot of grit and passion regarding their topics after spending many week researching and working together to create solid arguments.  The four different teams debated whether or not children under the age of 13 should have cell phones, and also if the United States should convert to the metric system.  These topics were developed and voted on by the club members.  Each team presented an opening statement, rebuttals, cross examination questions and closing statements.  This group will have at least one more debate this semester.  Watch for the 2nd semester sign ups for this club coming out soon!
