NO PLACE FOR HATE STUDENTS & KID PRESIDENT HELP WITH MORNING MEETINGS
Many of you may have made the connection between our Spread No Place For Hate Like Confetti theme and Kid President's quote, "Throw kindness around like confetti.  Kindness is less messy."  This quarter we are using Kid President's inspirational words, videos and book to provide a positive role model for our students.  Kid President embodies our Horizon Honors values, along with grit and passion to make the world a better place.  Before Kid President was Kid President, he was Robby Nowak, a young boy with osteogenesis  imperfecta, a genetic birth defect causing his bones to be brittle and break easily.  When Robby made his first video he had already experienced seventy breaks.  With the help of his brother-in-law, they began making videos to help inspire others and to create change.  Their goal is not to be famous, but to help kids see that even though they are "just kids" they can make a difference too.  His most recent video is an updated "Pep Talk" to wake us all up and ask us what we are going to do to be kind and help others.  Please talk to your child about the values each week and what they are learning from Kid President.  Help them take their passions and ideas and put a plan into place.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE FOR CLOTHES CABIN
Last quarter the Horizon Honors Service Club helped to facilitate a school supply drive for the Clothes Cabin, a non-profit organization that services homeless families.  Service Club members also created special notes filled with kindness and inspirational quotes for the students that would receive our donations.  We are so thankful to all of the generous families that we have here at Horizon Honors.  Thank you for your help and donations!

HOW DO I HELP EMPOWER MY CHILD AND DEVELOP PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS THAT WILL BENEFIT THEM IN THE FUTURE?
This week as part of our No Place For Hate promise, our teachers met to discuss various strategies to empower our students to problem solve and become allies for themselves and for one another.  We also discussed the importance being able to differentiate behaviors as being rude, mean or true bullying behaviors to effectively assist in the problem solving process.  Throughout our discussion many teachers, who are also parents, reflected on the difficulties of trying to navigate the challenges their children face and the level of their involvement with the problem solving process. A constant theme throughout the article reminds us that the best strategies we can apply as parents and teachers are to listen, remind students they have choices, and to help guide them to avoid being the victim and "rewrite their own story."  Please take some time to read through the articles below.  There are many powerful "take-aways" for parents to reflect upon and have in place to help support and empower our child(ren).

5-6 VOLLEYBALL UPDATE
What a season for the 5-6 volleyball team!  After a loss to Scottsdale Christian early in the season, the girls arrived at SCA on Tuesday and took charge early with two fast wins at 25-22 and 25-17. Great passing, serving and enthusiasm, made for an exciting match.

Come cheer on your Eagles this Saturday at home, as they host a Jamboree with our first game at 9:00 a.m. and second at 10:30.
