CWIP Grant:

The team in NWA just completed the last training as part of The Child Wellness Intervention Project (CWIP) grant by the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission (ATSC).

PE4life was privileged to partner with the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission and the Arkansas Department of Education's (ADE) Office of Coordinated School Health in collaboration with Arkansas Children's Hospital to provide a one day community involvement training to 37 school/community teams.

The teams consisted of 6 members: a PE teacher, a principal, the Superintendant and three community members. The one day session gave attendees an overview of PE4life, our philosophy and principles as well as a crash course in how to market their program, become an advocate for quality physical activity in their school and community, as well as fundraising and grant writing tips.

The Care Foundation Grant:

PE4life has been awarded a “School Based Fitness” grant from the Care Foundation, Inc. in the amount of $177,000 to further enhance quality physical education as part of the overall education for children in Bentonville, Siloam Springs and Springdale school districts. The grant focus is to integrate PE4life’s Core Principles in K-12 programs that can serve as models for other school districts across the state.

Under the grant, PE4life will conduct detailed assessments of schools within the above mentioned districts identifying the ones who will participate in PE4life professional development, be eligible to apply for equipment scholarships, and begin their journey to achieving quality physical education programming which will enhance learning and create lifetime wellness for the children in their district. The grant’s action plan will also include continued assessment of and professional development support for previously Care Foundation funded schools, grades K-12.

Motion Fitness

motion fitnessIn a recent partnership with Humana, Motion Fitness is proud to showcase the Horsepower Challenge to PE4life schools across the country!  The Horsepower Challenge, with hundreds of millions of steps logged so far, is an online game designed especially for kids that is powered by real-world activity with a virtual race around the planet. Keeping with the PE4life vision of “building healthy student bodies-one at a time” they are promoting a game that encourages children to lead an active lifestyle through fun, interactive, online games.

Using technology within personal activity monitors, they will be able to track the physical steps of a student every day the challenge runs.  As players take more steps, they will be rewarded for their activity through in-game rewards. Administrators and Educators can track, measure and assess the participants activity through automatic reporting systems (no manual self reporting necessary).

They not only reward for individual steps, but also build teamwork into the game by having groups of individuals (i.e. classes, sport teams, after school programs, etc.) compete against one another in a virtual race.  So one school could compete against another all the way on the other side of the country - or even the world!

Their vision is for children to understand that being physically active is not just something they do in a Physical Education class, but something you can do every day outside of school as well.  Visit www.activegameplay.com for more information or email parker@motionfitness.com.

SCIFIT

SCIFIT® Program Keeps Kids Moving

scifit-logo+yellow-RevisedSome students in Clearwater, Kansas did not get a summer break…from fitness. The students and student athletes who participated in Clearwater’s summer/off-season program have been working hard to improve fitness levels. In June the school tested 120 students and student athletes from grades 7-12 using their new SCIFIT equipment and SCIFIT’s Power Fit™ test protocol. The 10 minute test measures power output (watts) over a series of five intervals. The students’ scores were recorded and in September the test will be repeated to determine progress made over the summer.

SCIFIT’s Corey Disler, VP Sales, was present at the initial testing, “There was no down time for anyone. The students who were not exercising were busy acting as coaches and cheerleaders. It was great to see them cheering and motivating one another.

The SCIFIT workouts are pre-programmed and saved on a Fit-Key™. The students simply insert the key and follow the instructions on the screen. The instructors like the ease with which the kids can get started and move through the workout. They also like the power and strength training capabilities of the equipment using familiar cardio movements.

Randy Vogel, PEP Grant Program Manager, said, “The SCIFIT equipment has opened up so many more doors for our students and athletes. We now have a valuable cardio option to go with our strength component.”

Clearwater is a recipient of the Carol M. White Physicial Education Program Grant.

For more information contact SCIFIT at 800.278.3933 or info@scifit.com. Visit their website www.SCIFIT.com.
