InterfaitIFB 2010.jpgh News

Outreach efforts continue for recruiting teams for the Interfaith Build scheduled for September in Hillsdale. HFHI released a study about how churches in America are in the process of reinventing themselves to be able to provide congregations what they feel they are lacking. There has been a rising push for service to the community, and many churches are searching for tools to promote mission work. Habitat is a tool that can be used by churches to serve low-income families within the community. Habitat serves churches by providing a resource for families within the congregation that are in need of decent housing, as well as a method of involving church members in service programs.  The Interfaith Build is a great way to get teams of mission-focused groups involved in a community project. It can be a terrific service-learning project for youth groups, with the younger students developing and coordinating the fundraising portion, and older students actually participating in the construction of the home. With many churches hosting Vacation Bible School this summer, the IFB is a great side-project for the children to help with. They can have a penny war contest, or do a special offering. Additional tools and projects are available by request by calling the office or contacting Jennifer Tidwell at jtidwell@habitatmobile.org.  To learn more about the Interfaith Build, click on the link below.

Volunteer Update  31.jpg

Two homes in Hillsdale (6403 Biloxi and 507 Palmer) were dedicated Friday, May 7 at 3:30 pm.  The Hillsdale neighborhood welcomes the Pittmans and the Mosleys!  Three houses in Hillsdale remain to finish up the interior. They should be finished by the end of June. A groundbreaking ceremony for the next house is scheduled for June 23rd at 10 AM in Irvington. Work will start the next day, Thursday June 24 at 8AM as we raise the first of the walls. We are in need of about 15 volunteers that first day to help us get the house started. The Bowman's are the intended homeowners for the house. Matt and Amanda Bowman live with their three year old daughter in a double wide mobile home.  There is significant mildew throughout the home, and the leaking roof causes the mildew to worsen.  There is air infiltration throughout the home (walls, windows, and doors), which results in high utility bills.  The shower in the master bath has a crack in the floor which lets water run onto the subflooring.  There are safety issues for the family due to drug use in the areroof_raise.jpga. The new house will not be located in the Magnolia Crest subdivision, but the site is near that area. Please call the office (251) 476-7171 to volunteer and receive directions. Because our teams are focused on rehabing the NSP houses during the week, this build will take place only on Saturdays after the initial framing blitz.
