April Homeowner Orientation will be in Semmes

DSC02143.JPGTake note!  The April Homeowner Orientation will not be held at the ReStore where they usually are held.  We are attempting to make it easier for people out in the county to access our orientations by holding them in different locations more convenient to the outlying areas of the county.  We will be holding our next orientation on April 17 at the Semmes Branch of the Mobile Public Library at 10:30 a.m.

Volunteer News - Upcoming Opportunities

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we really do appreciate our volunteers.  It is so special that there are people in our community, and from around the country, that care enough about others to give up their time to help us with our mission of alleviating substandard housing.  Every moment that you have spent on the worksite, at the ReStore, at the Habitat office, or advocating for Habitat is treasured by our staff and our families!  Thank you for continuing to support habitat for Humanity!

We will be finishing up three houses in Hillsdale in April.  There are two houses on Yazoo Street, and the LOWES Build house on Line Street under construction. Many of our construction crew leaders will shift over to NSP rehab projects, but we will continue to work on new construction on Saturdays.  If you have a group that would like to come work with us during the week, Tuesday-Friday, we can accommodate you if you let us know a week ahead of time.

March Volunteer Recap

IMG_0660.JPGWOW! What a month! We had over 800 volunteers work with us in the month of March! There were ten houses under construction, five of them in Hillsdale.  We finished and dedicated both houses in Belwood.  Forty-four Care-A-Vanners worked over 6,000 hours on those two houses, and were very proud to be able to hand the keys over to the Childress and Klossing families last week.  Several of the out-of-town groups worked with them, as well as some local volunteers from University of South Alabama, local high schools, and the Church of the Good Shepherd.  The houses in Fairview and Irvington were finished, and will be dedicated later this month.  Dedications for two of the houses in Hillsdale will be ready for dedication soon, thanks to our March groups.

Collegiate Challenge Spotlight

Community High School from West Chicago has returned this year with a group of ten enthusiastic volunteers. Teacher Kristina Mallon is no stranger to working with the Mobile affiliate.  She brought a group of students to Mobile last April to work over Spring Break, and before they had left the city limits, the students were asking Ms. Mallon to schedule a return trip.  They did return three months later, over summer vacation, to frame up a house for a week in June. While they were working on that project, Ms. Mallon gave us the dates for this year’s Spring Break trip.  This year, they are working on two houses in Irvington.  They were thrilled to be able to see the finished house that they had helped frame up last April.  Most of the students are seniors in high school, and we hope they will go on to become involved in local Habitat affiliates near the colleges they attend.

FUNdraise for Habitat!

Like all nonprofits right now, Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County is experiencing a drop-off in donations, especially large donations from corporate partners.  To make up for this, we need more help from individuals and community groups than ever before!  There are many ways to help fundraise for Habitat.  Some tried and true ideas include bake sales, yard sales, car washes, doughnut sales, dinners, labor auctions, and lots more!  Call Anita at 251-476-7171 for more info and ideas on fundraising for Habitat.  Fundraising is a fun way to help your favorite organization and spend time with friends and family at the same time!
