Donate to Habitat Today!

Every little bit helps, especially when a community works together to build a house.  While we normally focus on volunteering as the perfect way to help Habitat, we also need your help in another way.  Donations to Habitat help us build more houses too!  We need your financial contribution to help us make safe, decent, affordable housing a reality for more families in 2010.  Please consider clicking on the donate button at the top of this email today and making a contribution.

Collegiate Challenge 2010 Featured Groups

There are 24 Collegiate Challenge groups this month! We in the HFHMC office refer to this time as “March Madness”! Several of these groups are new groups that have never worked with the Mobile affiliate before, but there are some returning groups, as well.  Our featured group this month is one of those returning groups.  Forty students from Oxford College of Emory University in Georgia will descend upon the Hillsdale subdivision the second week in March. The students are familiar with Hillsdale. They framed up a house last year on Biloxi Avenue for Mary Curry. This year, they will work with LOWES employees to frame up a house on Line Street.  The group is staying at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  They called the HFHMC office last year, about three weeks after they left, to reserve space at the church for this year.  The students are enthusiastic and can’t wait to get started on another project with us.  They have requested to work with Site Supervisor Gary Gooch again; he led the team last year on the Biloxi house. Welcome back, Oxford College students!

February Volunteer Recap

Collegiate Challenge is off to a great start!  The students from Canada did a fantastic job of moving several houses forward!  Thanks to them, the houses on Palmer St. and Biloxi Ave. have roofs and are painted, and Magnolia Crest was made ready for interior work.  They also helped start another house in Hillsdale on Yazoo St.  A small group from Roberts Wesleyan College teamed up with the Care-A-Vanners in Bellwood. The special projects group from Alabama School of Math and Science also worked at Bellwood and Fairview.  Our friends from Hilliard Adopt-A-House (Ohio), King of Glory Lutheran Church (Indiana), Shepherd of the Woods (Florida), Delavan First Baptist (Wisconsin) and Washington County Habitat Affiliate (Wisconsin) all brought experienced teams down to frame and roof a house, side and paint three houses, and prepare a lot for landscaping. Special thanks to our local groups for keeping things going on Saturdays: AED, ABK, Davidson Key Club, Del-Teens, Word of Life Community Church, Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Sigma Tau, YAP, Fruitdale High School, and all of the individuals that continue to give of themselves to their community!

March Volunteer Update

Calling all crew leaders!!! We have a heavy schedule planned for March.  Over 180 students are expected next week, with 100 coming the following week.  We need additional crew leaders Tuesday-Friday to help with leadership on the sites.  Guys from the wonderful Tuesday Group will help out as much as they can, but if any of our volunteers feel comfortable leading a group of students, please call the office and let Josh or Jennifer know. Tasks include framing, roofing, siding, painting, flooring, and maybe some landscaping, so if you are experienced in any of these areas and available any of those weekdays, we need your help!  There are still some volunteer opportunities on Saturdays, as most of the groups will be leaving at the end of the week. Please call the office to sign up.

 Mark Your Calendars

It is time to start thinking about plans for late spring and early summer.  We are trying to prepare for the May “doldrums” when all of our Collegiate Challenge groups have left us and we have unfinished houses sitting.  The end of April and early May are notoriously slow for volunteers at Habitat.  Family events are planned, there are graduations to attend, and warm weather to enjoy.  We are asking you to consider planning a family build day, or to commit to working a half day with us before or after an event. Please help us finish these houses so that the families can move in.
