November Volunteer Recap
Thank you to all of the volunteers that made our busy November schedule a success! Volunteers got the house in Grand Bay and the Interfaith Build in Hillsdale painted on the exterior and interior, and ready for flooring. We also started two houses in Theodore, a house in Fairview and a house in Irvington, which will provide tons of opportunities in December. The house on Airview Drive was dedicated on November 20.
Our first two teams of AmeriCorps NCCC arrived in mid-November. They have hit the ground running and have already accomplished several tough tasks. They will remain in Mobile working with us until mid-December. The teams are made up of 11 people in each team, originating from all over the country. Team members go through an intensive training program before they are deployed nationwide for 10 months, traveling to different locations and helping with disaster response and non-profit organizations. Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County has requested and been granted a total of 14 teams to help us build throughout the year. Teams are generally assigned to us for 6 weeks at a time. If you have the opportunity to work with any of the NCCC’s, please take the time to talk with them about your own volunteer experiences, and please feel free to offer any suggestions for additional volunteer opportunities or any cultural events in which they might be interested.
December Volunteer Opportunities
There will be a need for weekday volunteers comfortable with trim work for the Grand Bay and Interfaith houses. We hope to have flooring installed in both houses by the end of the first week in December, so trim and shelving is next on the list. We also will continue framing and roofing on the two raised floor houses in Theodore, the house in Danita Circle (Fairview), and the house in Magnolia Crest (Irvington). Please note that we will continue to work Tuesday-Saturday through December 19. Workdays the week of Christmas will be Tuesday and Wednesday, (Dec. 22 and Dec. 23). We will return to work the following Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday (Dec. 28, 29 and Jan. 2).
Winter Break Volunteer Opportunities
Habitat for Humanity is a great way to get involved for students and teachers out of school for winter break! There will be some limited opportunities for students ages 14-15, but please remember that you must be accompanied by an adult. We will be roofing, painting, siding, landscaping and installing floors and trim in the upcoming weeks. Call (251) 476-7171 or email jtidwell@habitatmobile.org to sign up.
Subaru Shares the Love
Keep your eyes and ears open for more info about a local partnership between Subaru and Habitat Mobile! As part of this program, if you buy a Subaru from our local dealership between now and January 4, 2010, they will donate $250 to a nonprofit organization. Habitat for Humanity International is on that list, so if you're in the market for a car, you could help us build more houses! For more information on the Subaru Share the Love campaign, click here!
Faith Relations - A Great Way to Get Involved
Is your church looking for a mission project within your own community? If you’re not afraid to get out and get your hands a little dirty, set aside a day to volunteer with Habitat Mobile!! We always need volunteers on our build sites and your church congregations could help us!! This is a great way to help out a family in need and help them make home ownership a reality!
Also, if you know fellow church members who would be interested in helping Habitat Mobile and you would like for your church to partner with us by praying, volunteering, providing meals for build sites or giving financially, please consider becoming a Faith Liaison with our Faith Relations department. There’s not too much to it, you would only be responsible for getting the word out to your fellow church members, recruiting small or large groups of volunteers (depending on congregation size) and staying in contact with the Faith Relations Coordinator.
If you’re interested in setting up a day to volunteer or becoming a Faith Liaison, please contact Gretchen Clanton, Faith Relations Coordinator at 476-7171 or gclanton@habitatmobile.org and she will be happy to speak with you!
Neighborhood Stabilization Program Underway
Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County has been busy, not just with new construction, but with a new rehabiliation program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This program is set up to lower the number of foreclosures in our area. Habitat Mobile has been buying foreclosures and then going in and fixing them up for sale to our homeowners. The homeowners still must complete the required number of sweat equity hours and are still responsible for going to the homeownership classes. Habitat Mobile is almost finished with its first NSP home and will dedicate it on December 11. Other NSP projects are underway in an effort to revitalize neighborhoods across Mobile County.
Interfaith Build
Keep your eyes and ears open for news about our Interfaith Build dedication. It's coming up soon! And remember to check back with us about next year's Interfaith Build. This year's event was very successful and we hope to get even more local churches involved in 2010!
