May 2010 |
HOORAY for Shelley Rogers!
For the last 6 months, Shelley Rogers has been holding down the fort for the coalition and nobody could be better suited for the position. Finally, necessary changes in the coalition structure have been made to lighten Shelley's workload.
Shelley will now be taking over the position of Program Coordinator and we're all certain that she will continue the fantastic work and positive attitude that she is known for! Lynn Skrukrud will also be joining us as the Youth Outreach Coordinator. Many of you probably already know Lynn as she has been involved with countless prevention efforts in Nevada County over the last 5 years as well as helping create NEO. Also joining us is Lindy Beatie as Program Director. An active member in the community for many years, Lindy is a natural fit with the Coalition and we look forward to everything she has to offer.
Lastly, after 6 months on the prevention side of treatment, David Lester will be transitioning over to CoRR to continue working on the treatment side in the adolescent department. |

Ellen Hopkins Event
Last Thursday night, bestselling author Ellen Hopkins came to speak at Nevada Union's Don Baggett Theater. The doors opened at 5:00 and the lobby was quickly buzzing with excitement as kids and adults shuffled in. Barnes & Noble was present with Ellen's books for sale, as well as numerous other titles dealing with similar issues.
When Ellen took the stage, the theater sat quietly as she gave insight and backstory to herself and her novels. Following the presentation, Ellen graciously answered questions from the audience ranging from deeply personal to her preferred toppings on a pizza. After leaving the stage, fans were delighted as she stayed to sign books and programs for everyone who attended. In addition to her inspiring presentation, Ellen conducted two writing workshops at Nevada Union the following morning.

The Coalition would like to thank Ellen Hopkins, Jill Sonnenberg, Annie Hestbeck, Kim Honeywell, Becka Callahan and NEO for their participation and help in making the wonderful evening happen!

Every 15 Minutes
Every 15 minutes is a very emotional event held at Nevada Union every 2 years. It is a demonstration used to spread awarness about the dangers of drinking and driving among highschool students. This event is intended to mimic a drunk driving accident. Students are selected by their teachers to "die" and are dressed in make up to appear as "living dead". There is a reinactment of a car crash on the Nevada Union football field. A kid is pulled out of class every 15 minutes to represent the fact that every 15 minutes a person is killed in a drunk driving accident.
The kids that "died" spent the night at Camp Del Oro. The next day Nevada Union has a funeral for the students. The parents are talked to by police officers telling them that there kid has died. Tears are shed, emotions are haywire, and everyone in the Ali Gym felt the reality of a drunk driving accident. Boxes of tissues were passed from person to person and hugs were exchanged between the living and the dead. More tears were shed. Parents spoke on behalf of their children and shared stories of how their lives have been effected by someone driving under the influence. The only way to really describe the expierence is "mind-blowing". Everyone had their heads in their hands so that they wouldn't see the tears pouring from their faces. It is a very difficult thing to go through for any parent that had to go through it.
With the help of Every 15 Minutes, every year students are made aware of how dangerous driving under the influence can be. For more information on this powerful event, go to http://www.every15minutes.com/enter/ |
Monthly Asset Tip: Asset #17
Learning that’s fun and worthwhile—what could be better? Creative Activities is Asset 17 of Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets, the qualities, experiences, and relationships that help young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.
Research shows that young people who spend three hours or more a week in music, theater, or other arts are more likely to grow up healthy. Only 21 percent of young people, ages 11–18, do so, according to Search Institute surveys. It’s important to help young people find creative outlets that are fun, teach them about themselves, and provide a way to relieve the stresses of everyday life.
