Merging NMC and SVMH: An Opportunity for Efficiency a

This spring, Salinas-area medical leaders will have a rare opportunity to bring their two hospitals together, with the goal of reducing costs and avoiding duplication of services.

Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital (SVMH), struggling to emerge from a financial downturn, is seeking a suitable affiliation partner to help it survive. Because SVMH was built with public tax dollars, voters will have the final say on any affiliation. Meanwhile, the Natividad Medical Center (NMC), which is owned and operated by Monterey County, is flourishing.

Supervisor Parker first proposed the affiliation to Jim Gattis, president of the SVMH board of directors, in a letter in October 2011.

If the two hospitals could share administrative costs such as medical department heads and finance, billing, and IT, a significant amount of money could be saved.

The hospitals already provide complementary services; for instance, SVMH has cardiology and neurology services that Natividad does not, while NMC offers an acute rehabilitation program and the County's only secure psychiatric ward.

For more information on the potential affiliation, visit www.natividad.com.

Commission Vacancy: In-Home Support Services

Supervisor Parker is seeking an interested individual to appoint to the In-Home Support Services Commission for Monterey County. The purpose of the Commission is to make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and the In-Home Support Services Public Authority about the preferred modes of services to be provided within the County. Qualifications for service on the Commission include current or past use of, and familiarity with, publically or privately funded in-home and personal assistance services and the ability to attend meetings regularly.

The Commission meets the second Tuesday of each Month, 1:30 PM at 1000 South Main Street in Salinas.

Redevelopment Oversight Board Representatives Needed

The Redevelopment Dissolution Act (AB126) dissolves redevelopment agencies effective February 1, 2012 and transfers responsibilities for winding down redevelopment activities to Successor Agencies. The law requires the creation of Oversight Boards for each redevelopment agency, and that a member of the public serves on each board.

On March 27, 2012, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will consider the appointment of public representatives for the County and each city. Individuals interested in serving on an Oversight Board as a Public Member are encouraged to call or send an e-mail to the District 4 office at: jane.parker@co.monterey.ca.us by March 23, 2012.

For more information, call Supervisor Parker\u2019s Chief of Staff Kristi Markey at 883-7576.
