Whispering Oaks/MST

On February 14, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will decide whether to rescind its previous approval of the Whispering Oaks Business Park and bus maintenance yard on the former Fort Ord or place the issue on the June ballot. Citizen organizations collected nearly 18,000 signatures in less than 30 days to challenge the Board\u2019s July 2011 approval of the project, which would result in the destruction of 3,000-4,000 oak trees. Supervisor Parker cast the only dissenting vote. The Board has multiple options for its action on February 14th, including a full or partial rescission.  If the board does not vote to rescind its approval of the EIR as well as the use permits, it is possible the project could be brought back at a later date in a modified form.

Become an Advocate for the Poor

Supervisor Parker is still looking for a person dedicated to alleviating poverty in Monterey County to serve on the Community Action Commission. The Commission advises the Board of Supervisors on programs and policies affecting the homeless and low-income residents. The Commission aims to promote approaches that empower low-income persons, improve their quality of life, and help them become self-sufficient.

Commission meetings are held the third Monday of each month from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at 1000 South Main Street, Suite 110, in Salinas. The term length is three years.
