Child of the Month Dresden!

Dresden is an outstanding patient at Now I Can. He is 2-years old, and his favorite foods are gold-fish, potatoe wedges, and spaghetti. He loves dancing, swimming, going to the park, reading books, watching Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh. Dresden has grown to develop a fond relationship with his therapists at Now I Can (Sergio and Nicole).  Dresden enjoys being read to while he gets stretched in the morning. He enjoys playing the guitar while being in the monkey cage, as well as playing the Wii while in the stander.  Dresden's overall walking pattern has improved since being in the program. His external rotation is minimal, his "toe walking" has reduced, he takes more even, balanced steps, and his overall movement is more fluid. "We know that Now I Can is THE best treatment out there for Dresden" (Dresden's mom, Kim).

Family Recreation Tip

Recreation is a tool that can strengthen families and individuals as they engage in wholesome and meaningful recreation. Take an hour out of the week to spend time together playing a game or taking a walk. Family time and recreation go hand in hand as they strengthen the leaders of tomorrow.

"The best times of life are full of smiles and laughter. It is only natural for recreation to bring happiness" (Dr. Brian J. Hill).

Physical Therapy Tip

For most of us,eating and drinking is a pleasure and an important opportunity to  meet socially with friends and family. For children with Cerebral Palsy feeding is a great challenge that needs to be addressed by special techniques and proper management.  This problem is not just the product of oral motor dysfunctions but the presence of abnormal tone that can alter this vital function. Normalization of tone by a Physical Therapist can improve oral sensory awareness and therefore facilitate this important function in your child.

Here are some simple hints to practice at home:

-The first and most important thing to do is to facilitate head and trunk control. Without proximal control, normal swallowing patterns are difficult if not impossible to attain.

-Practice passive jaw opening and closing facilitate chewing patterns and close lips around the feeding utensil.

-The tongue is vital for taste, mastication, deglution and speech; with a moist tongue depressor  practice lateral and rotatory tongue movements to facilitate mobility.

-Sucking on a lollipop (particularly a chewy one) will enhance both the mobility and stability levels of tongue control and will  facilitate lip and jaw musculature.

-Finally be observant to find out the texture, consistency and flavor that your child really enjoys and that at the same time can provide high nourishment levels.

A Partner in Producing Resultsfrom the Director

We recently took our daughter to Dr. Chris Chapman at the Nucca Spinal Center just a mile from Now I Can.  Dr. Chapman specializes in corrections of the upper vertebraewith no cracking!  Dr. Chapman did thorough X-rays of Colbys head and neckwhich showed her C2 was significantly out of alignment.  After making the correction, which was painless and gentlethe follow-up X-rays showed a dramatic movement and realignment!

Dr. Chapman believes that this treatment is helpful for a myriad of problems.   Once there is no longer a restriction of blood flow to the brain, the brain can work more efficiently and effectively in sending messages to the body.  Its exciting to have the Nucca Spinal Center so close to Now I Can.  If you are interested in visiting the Nucca Spinal Center at the beginning of your session at Now I Can, you can call Joyce at their office. 801-655-1801.
