CultureWire: May, 2009
Winston Churchill said: “There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction." In this spirit, I'm pleased to introduce Greater Philadelphia CultureWire℠, the Cultural Alliance's new e-newsletter. We hope this change from printed to an electronic format will give you the information you need in a more timely, succinct, actionable, and eco-friendly format.
CultureWire will include much of the same content you found in our former print newsletter like news, events, interviews, and opportunities. The new format will also enable the Alliance to deliver valuable information faster, while decreasing our use of paper. We look forward to keeping you informed about important, time-sensitive issues like the Pennsylvania State Senate's recent bill eliminating all arts and culture funding, so that you can read about them and then easily take action.
We think that Sir Winston would be pleased with this change and we hope you are, too. Let us know what you think. As always, we appreciate the great work that you do, and the power of partnership that advances our sector.
Sincerely,
Peggy Amsterdam
President

Public demand for arts & culture strong, but funding threatened
Despite stable (and for some, growing) attendance, Southeastern Pennsylvania's cultural groups face funding threats on multiple fronts. Budget pressures at the local and state levels have prompted public officials to propose taxes and budget cuts that could adversely impact regional nonprofit organizations. More troubling, the Pennsylvania Senate has proposed a budget that threatens to eliminate all state funding for arts and culture. Learn more about these proposals and what the Cultural Alliance and others are doing to fight these measures.
