Terry PaulsonA Christmas Reminder of Our Dual Citizenship
Guest Essay by Terry Paulson

Over half of voting Americans are pleased to see Barack Obama continue for a second term, while just under 50% are wondering how voters could reelect him after such a dismal record of broken promises. As believers, we ask - Is God guiding us, punishing us, or reminding us again of what truly counts in the Kingdom of God. After all, at this time of the year, when we celebrate the birth of Christ when God chose to lower himself into our playpen that by His grace we might join the family of God, we wonder what God is doing to this country we love.

"I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."

Jerry NewcombeThe Birth of a Classic: Handel's Messiah
Guest Essay by Jerry Newcombe

One of my favorite viral videos circulating around the world through the Internet takes place in a food court in a mall, presumably in Canada.

As people are eating and resting from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, suddenly a woman with a scarf on, who appears as an ordinary shopper, stands up and starts singing the "Hallelujah Chorus."

Clearly, this is a professional musician, soon joined by another professional musician singing a different counterpart to the first soloist.

Then come other singers, one after another.

These are high quality musicians, and the whole act is well choreographed (and well shot too). What throws off the average viewer is the inconspicuous appearance of the singers. They fit right in with the frazzled shoppers.

This beautiful video, recorded in November 2010, has now had more than 39 million views.

Mrk R. RushdoonyJesus Christ: He Whose Right It Is
Guest Essay by Mark R. Rushdoony

The origins of Christmas go back much further than Bethlehem. Christmas was first promised in Eden after Adam and Eve sinned and before their expulsion from the garden, when God promised that the seed of Eve would crush the head of the serpent (Gen. 3:15). Bethlehem was the place where that child was born and so we celebrate His incarnation as the prelude to that crushing blow He delivered at Calvary.

Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, believed in this promise and so by divine inspiration gave his greatest blessing not to his firstborn, but to Judah:
Judah, thou are he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thy enemies: thy father's children shall bow down before thee.
Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he crouched as a lion, and an old lion; who shall rouse him up? (Gen. 49: 8-9)

These words promise a position of prominence to Judah, one even greater than his brothers or their descendants. Judah's future is compared to a lion's cub; it will mature on prey; its power and strength will grow like a cub fed by it mother's prowess. Judah's prominence is also compared to an old lion's: even when he crouches down to rest he will be dangerous so that none will dare trifle with him.

A Word In Season (Vol. 1-3)

by R. J. Rushdoony

These daily messages on the faith for all of life are unlike any compilation of Christian "devotional" ever published. In these pages, you won't find the overly introspective musings of a Christian pietist; what you'll discover are the hard-hitting convictions of a man whose sole commitment was faithfulness to God's law-word and representing that binding Word to his readers.

"Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart." ~Washington Irving

Stephen McDowellThe Prince of Peace
Guest Essay by Stephen McDowell

Jesus began His ministry proclaiming "the Kingdom of God is at hand" (Mark 1:15). Three decades prior to this, the King of the Kingdom came to earth in human form. At Christmas, we celebrate the incarnation – the coming of the eternal, omnipotent King.

Paul defines the Kingdom of God as "righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17). Jesus instructed us to seek first God's Kingdom and His righteousness, and as we do, many other things (like peace, prosperity, and joy) will be added to you (Matthew 6:33). When God's Kingdom comes – when we submit to His government and apply His righteous standard to our lives – we will lead a peaceful and blessed life. Life without the King is restless and miserable. This peace resides chiefly within our hearts and minds, and is available even under the worst conditions.

Carole AdamsChristmas Classics
Guest Essay by Carole Adams

The joy of Christmas is the Gospel dressed up in lights and love! While the entire world pauses in December to observe the birth of our Savior, Christmas offers lavish opportunities to rise above the world and to instruct, inspire, and form the character of our children.

At Christmas, we can deliver the joy of the Gospel into the very hearts of our children through song, story, and art. Christmas is a major theme in the classic literature, in the great masterpieces of painting and music, and its carols are a genre much loved by all. To share Christmas through the classic arts and literature with children is formative for all – from the adult to the tiniest child.

A classic is a work of literature or art that endures, that has universal appeal to all ages and all cultures, and that delights with its artistic and permanent qualities. Literature is also the “handmaid of history” teaching God's providence through stories, preserving timeless ideals, memorializing heroes, and instructing in wisdom, character, and morality.

By Annette Adams

Hope is one of my favorite words;
It gives me a lift when I'm dragging.
It's just like a good, fresh, hot cup of coffee
On mornings when spirits are sagging.

"Hope springs eternal in the human breast",
Words penned by Alexander Pope.
Through centuries quoted and still often noted,
We never outgrow words of hope.

But hope can be just "wishful thinking".
As "I hope I arrive right on time,
Or, "I really do hope that this team wins",
But there's hope that is far more sublime:

It is in God's Divine Dictionary;
And it has to do with Christ's birth;
It tells of His death and Resurrection,
That gives hope for all born on this earth.

And this is not just "wishful thinking";
It's "the life and the blood" of His story.
It's this hope that seals for us eternal life;
"Christ in us, our great HOPE of glory!"

(Hebrews 11:1 …" Now faith is being sure of what
we hope for and certain of what we do not see.")
