Welcome Beatrice and Nasma aboard
With joy and anticipation, we are announcing two new team members.
Beatrice Martini, our Human Rights Technology Lead, is originally from Florence, Italy, and now lives in Berlin, Germany. She will work with us to help articulate technology practices, facilitate digital security literacy, and help grow a shared language in the human rights technology ecosystem.
Say hello
Nasma Ahmed, our summer Capacity Building Intern, comes to us from Toronto, Canada, where she is a public policy student, community organizer, and accidental techie working closely with nonprofits and women of color. This summer, she's helping to develop youth outreach strategies to increase participation in our events and trainings.
Say hello
CA Nonprofit Tech Leadership Summit near Bakersfield
On July 30 and 31, fellow capacity builders, mentors, and community organizers from across the state are coming together at the first California Nonprofit Technology Leadership Summit, taking place at the National Chavez Center near Bakersfield, California.
Over the years, returning CA Tech Fest participants expressed interest in exploring more ways to address the unique technology challenges they face, and share models to foster emerging leadership in their communities. The CA Tech Summit is an immersive experience designed to address this need, and to strengthen the network of rural and urban leaders passionate about social justice and technology in California.
Registration is open, and help with travel is available. Just get in touch with us.
Weaponized Social: Where from here?
Weaponized Social is an emerging program that seeks to support a healthier online ecosystem. Since our last gathering in New York, we've been to Nairobi on May 2nd, hosted WeapSoc SF at our home office in San Francisco, and facilitated the International Workshop on Misogyny and the Internet in Cambridge, MA.
Explore the Weaponized Social Wiki for notes from conversations, growing projects, and new possibilities. Many thanks to those who continue to share their ideas and resources with us. Read the latest updates in our blog.

Capacity Building from California to the East Coast
Nonprofit capacity building continues to be the heart of our work. Here are a few things that we've been up to:
- In early spring, we ventured from the Bay to Bakersfield, and then landed in Los Angeles to host the Social Justice Technology Skillshare, an interactive one-day technology workshop with local organizers and nonprofits.
- In collaboration with Maegan from IDEPSCA in Los Angeles, we facilitated a Spanish-language workshop to discuss online communications in organizing efforts. Read about our journey in translation and download the Spanish-language learning resources.
- We are fortunate to work with mentors and trainers that share our commitment to the human side of nonprofit technology. Misty and Beatrice recently collaborated with Dirk from Fabriders on a blog, "What We've Learned about Tech Capacity Building", which discusses why capacity building is important for NGOs.
- Striving to apply community organizing principles to nonprofit processes, we hosted a session at the Allied Media Conference in Detroit called "How to do online communications as organizer", where participants led a dialogue about communications through the lens of community organizing. Check out key take aways and resources from that workshop.
- In May, we held the first digital humanitarian response oriented event at the MIT Media Lab, the Humanitarian Technology Festival. Notes and resources are available on the wiki, and we invite you to read more about how we hope to support communities in becoming more resilient.
We are inspired by all the nonprofits, organizers, and trainers from around the world that invite us into their communities and endeavors. We are always looking for new partnerships and ways to work together, so reach out if you're interested: support@aspirationtech.org.
Open Campaigns Camp in Berlin
A few hours ago, we wrapped up the first-ever Open Campaigns Camp, a three-day event in Berlin, Germany. We teamed up with Greenpeace's Mobilisation Lab and Volunteering Lab to help bring together practitioners of technology-enabled open campaigning from around the world from July 21 to 23. You can see what happened there over the last few days by following the #OCCBerlin hashtag.
See you soon
Thank you for your continued support! Our ears and inboxes are always open if you need us. As fall approaches, you can save a seat at our annual Nonprofit Software Development Summit from November 18-20 in Oakland, California.
all the best,
Javier and the Aspiration team
