The brand new year is almost upon us. 2013 has been incredible and I know that 2014 will be even more so, collaborating with the people who inspire us, learn with us and, perhaps most importantly, celebrate with us.

Moments that Inspired Us in 2013

From the Bay to around the globe, the community we support and who support us are reminders of why we focus our efforts on technology for social justice. I wanted to highlight a few of those people from our community.

From our home in the Bay Area...

• I always geek out over the work of Monica, Ruth, and the team at Maven. They are pioneering ways to bridge the technology gap between LGBTQA centers and the youth they serve. Check out their virtual online community.

• One of the best surprises of my year was seeing the eAdvocacy video created by Jennifer Dueñas from the RYSE Youth Center. She breaks down how to engage peers and advocate online. If you haven't yet, watch the short video.

while driving around California...

• Homero, Yaquelin, and Adolfo at Congregations Building Community in Modesto are fighting hard every day to organize for undocumented youth and the Campaign for Citizenship to keep families together. Things are getting even more interesting since they started using social media and blogs to share their efforts online.

when visiting friends across the nation...

• At the 2013 Allied Media Conference in Detroit, I enjoyed collaborating with Sabiha, Sarah, and Andrea from Design Action who are essential partners to many grassroots movements and social justice advocates. I am grateful to have them in our family. See their social justice art.


• How cool is it to see the ‎Environmental Working Group release their Skin Deep App? They get critical information about personal care products directly to consumers. Get the App.

...to flying across international waters.

• I am still feeling the joy from working side by side with Dirk, Cheekay, Bobby, and the good people of the Southeast Asia Technology and Transparency Initiative at their convening in Jakarta to support budget transparency efforts in the Philippines and Indonesia. Read about the SEATTI convening.

• We are big fans of Michelle and the whole Mozilla crew from Mozfest 2013 in London. What a delight to learn from Mozilla Webmaker, Open Badges, and Open News about how to build and teach the web. Check out what was made at Mozfest.
