Aspiration Aspiration Aspiration Aspiration

Hi friends,

This winter, we are packing our bags for a trip around California, welcoming two new team members, and branching out into exciting circles where the web and social justice overlap. Here's to the new year ahead.

What's below

Team growth brings new possibilities for 2015

Willow and JC

In January, we had the joy of onboarding two new members onto the team.
JC Sanchez, as Technology Capacity Builder, will be driving our state-wide trainings to help organizations use technology more sustainably. Willow Brugh, as Community Leadership Strategist, will continue her work in digital response for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

  • Get to know more about what they will be working on and how you you can collaborate.

  • Willow is our first team member to work remotely. See her initial thoughts and tips about Telecommuting, and stay tuned for more tools and tactics you can use when working across timezones.

Reporting back from "Follow the Money"

We co-organized the "Using Technology to Follow the Money" workshop in Berlin with the Transparency and Accountability Initiative on January 20-21. This event was convened to explore technologies and strategies to improve the transparency of financial flows. The workshop brought together a group of campaigners, NGOs, techies, researchers, funders, and local activists from around the globe to discuss ways to keep institutions accountable.

Rethink the way we interact online at Weaponized Social

When Willow joined Aspiration, we became partners in this unique convening to re-imagine the social scripts of online interactions. Weaponized Social seeks to address a growing online problem: that negative social dynamics emerge and cascade more rapidly in online spaces. The combination of network effects and lower barriers to doing harm (e.g., the ease of writing YouTube comments) makes threats and attacks more common.

This event will take place in New York City on February 13th and 14th.

  • Stay tuned for the report-out after the convening next month.
  • Interested in attending a Weaponized Social event in San Francisco? Please let us know.

Wave us down during our California roadtrip

At the end of February, Misty and JC will drive down Highway 5 to meet with allies and learn about the technology needs of their organizations and communities. This Listening Tour in southern California is part of our continued and expanding capacity-building efforts across the state. Read more about our tour and ways to participate.

Our road agenda is dynamic depending on where conversations are happening. Please reach out to us if you want us to stop by your neighborhood. We hope to dialogue with organizations we have never worked with before!

What is up with you?

We want to know what exciting things are on your horizon this year! If you are in the neighborhood, come by and say hello at the San Francisco Nonprofit Technology Center. Otherwise, say hello over the web or catch us on the road in February.

best,
Javier & team Aspiration
