Hi friends,

The free and open web is an important space for our social movements. But recent developments are undermining the equity and security of the web. So in addition to resources and webinars to bolster your online presence, we've rounded up some tools to help protect you from digital surveillance and non-allies.

What's inside

Digital Security for activists & nonprofits

Email encryption is one way to affirm your right to digital privacy. Check out the encryption resources we used at the Allied Media Conference in June, where we discussed surveillance of racial justice activists. Thanks Jack and Jamila from Palante Tech for your collaboration in Detroit.

Security culture at NGOs means having a safe space to discuss risks, mistakes, and best practices. On July 23rd, we collaborated on a TA Initiative webinar to share our thoughts on surveillance and digital security at NGO's. The webinar recording can be found here.

Starting a conversation is the first step towards creating a safer space. We were humbled to host a session at the Maven Youth Tech Camp at Mozilla's SF office on July 11th, where we discussed the surveillance and privacy concerns facing LGBTQ youth activists.

#MakerParty to teach and learn the open web

maker party

Mozilla kicked off their annual MakerParty on July 15th—a two-month campaign to keep the web equitable and accessible through hands-on learning and teaching. Check out these Net Neutrality #MakerParty events and training kits happening around the globe.

We'll be hosting an Aspiration #MakerParty at the SF Tech Center on August 14th!

Reflection: "Five things I've learned as a Comms Coordinator"

Javier recently completed his first 120 days at Aspiration. Check out his personal blog post, where he shares some of his tactics for staying productive and sane while peering into the digital abyss.

Next time you're in the neighborhood

We want to know what you are up to! Come by and say hello at the San Francisco Nonprofit Technology Center. We'd love to talk about your security and privacy concerns and ways that we could help with your online presence. Coffee, conversation, and free wifi will be waiting.

best,
Javier & Misty
