COMMISSIONERS What's Happening 01/23

Parade of Flags - Opening Ceremony - Jambo 2010

Good Sunday Morning Fellow Commissioner,

The Commissioner Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many of you actually read all the way down to the calendar? More than once, I have heard Commissioners say, "I wish we had an 'up-to-date' district calendar!" Makes me wonder a bit. If you have not been to the "Dates and Such" section, check it out, I think you will find a lot of important information for your units.

Have you seen the new "Marketing Toolbox" that the BSA has put togther? Great information for helping with recruiting, or just adding some new pix to a Troop or Pack web site.

The BSA has issued a new medical form. Part A&B are on the same form, part C, and part D are separate forms (to be used as needed). Make sure your units know that the new form has been issued.

We are going to need to enlist the help of the Commissioners Staff with a membership issue. Seems some 72 youth, who were listed on the re-charter packets as "r11" or "rb11" were dropped by the units! Find it VERY hard to believe that units dropped members who were free during re-charter! In the past, the only way a young person who was paid for was dropped was if they moved out of the area (or transferred to another unit -- but then, they should not be on the list either).

The Central Florida Council has announced a new "Excellence in Training" award. Units may earn the award by having their Key 3 100% trained, and by assigning a "Unit Training Coordinator" who is also trained. More details, and the form for award submission (due by May 2nd) are available for download.

It was excellent to see so many Commissioners at the Roundtable on Thursday night! Thank you for coming out to support the units. Just as a reminder, those contacts and conversations we have with unit leaders at Roundtable count as "leader meetings" and should be recorded in UVTS. I recorded my contacts with ASMs from Troop 854, the Committee Chair from Troop 234, the Committee Chair from Ship 118 (good to see them there, and we discussed some recruiting strategies), and the Committee Chair and Scoutmaster from Troop 836. Have you posted your "leader meetings" from Roundtable in UVTS?

BSA's 2011 Brand Identity: "Prepared for Life"

Prepared. For Life. The Boy Scouts of America last week unveiled its brand identity pieces for 2011: "Prepared. For Life."

The trademarked words incorporate the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared," to show non-Scouts what Scouting is all about.

The three simple words convey a clear message: By joining Scouting, boys and girls will be prepared for life and for a lifetime.

Silver Beaver Award Nominations

silver beaverThe Silver Beaver Award is the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow on a volunteer. In 1931, B.S.A. President Mortimer L. Schiff recommended to the National Board that an award be devised for recognition of distinguished service to youth in the area of a local council and the concept of the Silver Beaver recognition was established. The award is made by the National Council, upon the recommendation of the Local Council.

The award is presented at the Council Recognition Banquet in June, with nominations coming from Scouters from within Central Florida Council. If you wish to nominate someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a volunteer Scouter, you can obtain a nomination form from the Council Office or you can download one here.

The deadline to submit nominations to the Council is Friday, April 8, 2011 by 5:00 p.m.

The deadline for submission on the District Award of Merit, is Friday April 15, 2011 to the District Committee or District Executive.
