IMG_0750 2Global Glimpse is keeping its promise; our unique approach to inspiring students to improve their own lives and engage with the world is keeping everyone interested.

As we enter our fifth year, we continue to partner with high schools that focus on empowering and enabling students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to be agents of change in their schools and communities.

Our students not only learn about the developing world, but gain deep insight into themselves and become strong leaders through after-school workshops and life-changing international study and service immersion. Through the experiences we provide, they are more equipped and inspired than ever to address the issues of their generation and improve their own lives and their community.

Letter from the Founder

Dear Global Glimpse Friends and Family, Abbas Newsletter 2011

In 2007 I had a vision to change the world by educating and inspiring American youth to change their lives and the world. Five years later Global Glimpse has trained 740 high school student leaders starting with some of the most deprived schools and communities. Our growth has been remarkable and this past year alone we served 240 students and 24 teachers .
This summer, I witnessed our students build a school for an underprivileged Nicaraguan village. I warned them that this would be difficult, require funding they did not have and that this was a project they had to do on their own. The students amazed me with their determination and success. Working with the community they raised $5,000, organized the cement, mobilized community volunteer workers, ensured the school had teachers available, confirmed long term community maintaince of the school and built a space serving a community of 400 kids, in just THREE weeks. Our students transformed the lives of these people forever, but just as important transformed their perspective of their role in the world and their own motivations.
Our organization is investing in further expansion with significant grant funding and generous donor support. We have held another year of successful fundraisers in New York City and San Francisco. I believe people choose to support us because of our tremendous impact in children’s lives as well as our philosophy of operating our non-profit with the best-practices from the “for-profit” world. Around 92% of donations directly reach participants and each donor dollar is tripled through our fee-for-service program.
However, for us to meet our strategic plan and grow to serve 300 students per year in 2012, 500 in 2013 and 1000 by 2017, we need to increase our fundraising by a factor of five and bring on a new Executive and Development Director with deep foundation and individual donor fundraising experience. Then I will have the opportunity to focus on my other role as Chairman of the Board to execute our strategy, develop our staff and build relations with our biggest supporters. Clearly, we have many more goals to accomplish and are very excited about the path ahead.

Thank you for your continued support,

Alumni Take Action

Jordan  My name is Jordan Wilson-Dalzell, a current high school senior and alumni of Global Glimpse. I spent three weeks in Nicaragua working with children; those three weeks changed my life. My delegation visited Susuma, an impoverished community perched above the dump. Children spend their days scrounging through trash for items they can sell so they can feed their families. A friend and I spent a morning with a family who lives in Susuma; the mother of five spoke about the tragedies that had befallen them and illustrated the faith that has enabled her to keep her family strong. Her strength through obstacles such as dire poverty and addiction inspired me to want to help her. Throughout the trip our coordinators emphasized our leadership abilities and our abilities to make a change: those words inspired my project "Esperanza".

My peers and I are creating an organization that will fundraise and collect donations to combat the poverty, resulting malnutrition, addiction and violence that plague the community. Our organization will have multiple chapters at various high schools. Our long-term goal is develop facilities within the community to provide food, education, and a hopeful future for the people living there.

My trip with Global Glimpse was the catalyst for this project; I am so grateful to the donors who graciously funded my trip, without you, I would know nothing about the struggles of Nicaragua. I thank you with all my heart for the extraordinary experience you gave me.  Your donations supported me and the incredible organization that is Global Glimpse.

Director's Thoughts

Global Glimpse has impressed me since I joined the organization three years ago as a coordinator in Nicaragua. This year is no different as I get comfortable in my role as the Director of the Scholar Program. This Fall we are adding six new schools to the partner school program and preparing the long waiting list of schools anxious to bring Global Glimpse to their students in the Fall of 2012. I see this increased demand as a testament to the spread of our strong reputation, built on the delivery of powerful and successful programs. We will serve 300 students at 24 schools and our dedicated volunteers will deliver 144 after-school workshops for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Due to the great demand of highly capable and passionate alumni who wish to support Global Glimpse to grow in their schools and communities, we have launched our Ambassador program that offers a vital and challenging internship for two nominted and accepted alumni at each partner school. The students are currently going through their final interview process and our team will have to make some difficult decisions.
As I look forward to another amazing year, I am humbled by the amount of youth, communities, and schools we have served in five years.

Thank you for joining us on this journey,

Victoria 2   "Before I traveled to Nicaragua, I was under the impression that because of my economic status and age I was at a disadvantage to help others. However, after my trip I realized that I was completely wrong. All the simple things I did made a difference; all it took was that first step.”
