Operation Real Bodies Real Love:
Local Non-Profit Strips Down to Make a Statement About What People Really Look Like
San Francisco, CA – Saturday, June 15, 2013 – About-Face, a San Francisco non-profit group that’s been challenging the status quo since 1995, is about to raise a ruckus again this Saturday in Union Square, as they challenge media’s representations of "perfect" bodies.
For the action, Operation Real Bodies Real Love, About-Face and supporters will be showing up in front of the Victoria’s Secret store and stripping down to their underwear, and then parading around Union Square. Their message is that you can be proud of your body even in the face of the unrealistic bodies we see in the media. While this event is open to participation from the public, passers-by are not required to disrobe unless they feel comfortable doing so.
These statement-making, attention-grabbing participants will be asking passers-by to sign a body pledge, encouraging them to accept and love their bodies for what they are. They will then be given tips on how to follow through with this pledge.
About-Face will also provide a list of demands for people to add to and sign that will be sent to companies such as Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria’s Secret that refuse to include more diverse bodies in their clothing design and/or advertisements.
Striving to represent the public and fight for more accurate bodies in the media, About-Face is hoping for people of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, abilities, genders, and gender expressions to join them as they promenade in Union Square.
If supporters can’t be there in person, people can follow the action on Tumblr and/or Twitter with the handle @aboutfacesf or #realbodiesreallove.
