A message from the Executive Director  JHughes-JAN10.JPG

As this edition of our newsletter is posted, Congress and the President - as well as a host of lobbyists and interest groups, including AHEC - are shaping the final health care reform legislation that will affect all Americans. Can any one of us fathom the impact of thirty million additional insured individuals and the pressure that will put on an already underserved/understaffed health delivery system? As citizens, we can be proud that our nation is taking steps to address the crisis of uninsured individuals, but as health care professionals and providers we surely have more than a little apprehension about how we will meet the need for significantly increased capacity.

Fortunately, the reform legislation is coupled with proposals for significant funding and mandates for a broad range of programs to increase and restructure the supply of health care professionals. At CNYAHEC, we eagerly await the final legislation and the resultant opportunities that will enable us to play our part.

To all who are health care professionals and providers, I urge you to stay connected with CNYAHEC over the coming months and be prepared to engage with us in the programs to restructure and add to our health professional workforce. You are also strongly encouraged to contact us directly with your ideas. As always, we are anxious to help at the local level to meet your community's needs.

It's a good time to be at the forefront of change! Together we can make life better for Central New York.

John R. Hughes, Executive Director

CNYAHEC ushers in 9th season of camps with new Program Manager

mash_7.gifThe 2010 health careers exploration camp season is underway at CNYAHEC! Emily Armstrong, CNYAHEC's former Training Coordinator, has transitioned into the role of Program Manager and will facilitate the organization's camps going forward.  Emily replaces Amber Webb, who departed CNYAHEC in September.

"I'm looking forward to leading these terrific programs and making them even more successful and popular with kids in our region," states Emily.

CNYAHEC's camp season officially began Saturday, January 30th with Natalie's Knee at Utica College.  The first M.A.S.H. camp is scheduled on February 17 & 18 at Community General Hospital.  CNYAHEC's camps are made available through partnerships with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield and hospitals and schools in the region.

In 2009, a total of 338 local students explored health care careers at CNYAHEC camps including M.A.S.H. camps, HealthQuest, MedQuest, and Natalie's Knee.  CNYAHEC received applications from 539 students.  Camps have a limited number of openings, and increased popularity of the programs over the years has resulted in a competitive application process.

M.A.S.H. camps (Medical Academy of Science and Health) offer hands-on experience working with real health care professionals in real health care settings at partnering hospitals throughout Central New York.  M.A.S.H. camps provide fun, interactive settings where students learn about the wide variety of careers available in health care.

HealthQuest at Ithaca College and MedQuest at SUNY Upstate Medical University offer high school students a tast of college campus life.  These week-long overnight camps are geared for older students and provide a deeper exploration of various careers and fields of study in health care.  Natalie's Knee provides students with an in-depth look at physical therapy.

CNYAHEC and R-AHEC partner to provide InService Solutions™ to health facilities in Western New York State

ISS Folder cover 2009.JPG
The Central New York Area Health Education Center (CNYAHEC) announces a partnership with the Rural Area Health Education Center (R-AHEC) of Western New York to launch InService Solutions™, an online in-service training program, to health facilities in western New York State.

R-AHEC is the first AHEC to join the InService Solutions™ AHEC Partnership Program, which was launched in September to AHECs across the country.  The partnership program allows AHECs nationwide to partner with CNYAHEC in offering InService Solutions™ to health care facilities within their region.  Through the partnership program, AHECs can offer InService Solutions™ in their own regions to effectively improve the quality of their local health care workforce while addressing the demanding in-service training requirements that health care facilities must meet.

CNYAHEC's InService Solutions™ is an innovative online system for managing health care facilities' in-service requirements.  Developed by health care professionals for health care professionals, InService Solutions™ frees health care facilities from the costly and time-consuming burden that often accompanies mandatory in-service training requirements.  Accessible on any computer with high-speed internet access, InService Solutions™ dramatically streamlines the testing, review, and reporting process while delivering high-level training, and is available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

R-AHEC is a not-for profit health workforce development organization that creates community partnerships to educate and place health professionals in the underserved areas where they are needed most.  For more information about InService Solutions™ for the western New York region, please contact R-AHEC Regional Coordinator, Dave Prete, at (585) 786-6275 or via email at prete@r-ahec.org.
