The annual free celebration of Providence, called I HEART PROVIDENCE, is back this Tuesday, Feb. 5th, 6-8pm on three floors within Providence City Hall. You and your friends are invited!

It's hard to believe five years have passed since Owen Johnson and I first reached out through Connect Providence and decided to confess our love for the city by throwing the very first Valentine's Day public party in Providence City Hall. Remember that?

Since that time, hundreds upon hundreds of Providence lovers have gathered each year to demonstrate their love in different creative ways.

Please join us this Tuesday night for free food, live music, an Avenue Concept art project, and a unique collaboration with RI Food Fights - a fun culinary battle for supremacy between six Providence chefs, three from the EastSide versus three from the WestSide. Winning chefs will be honored with awards, designed by Ahlers Design, in the following categories:
  • Best Chef (determined by panel of judges)
  • Best Side (determined by panel of judges)
  • The People's Choice (yeah, you vote for your favorite)
But we don't just love Providence East to West; we also love it North to South. There's plenty of participating restaurants, local businesses, and fun, interesting folks coming out. SEE YOU AT THE PARTY!

EASTSIDE TEAM

Chef Nemo Bolin opened Cook and Brown Public House in early 2010. The restaurant has received many notable accolades over the past three years to include two nominations for James Beard Awards and Food & Wine Magazine's declaration of Bolin as one of the best new chefs in New England, to which he responded, "My wife and I live to hear that unmistakble sigh when someone takes the first bite of their meal and just melts into their chair."

duck and bunny x140Brandy Schwalbe is the pastry chef at The Duck & Bunny, possibly the restaurant with the most loyal clientele in the entire state. Her youthful energy and love for the divine transforms into sophisticated baked goods, a perfect compliment to a restaurant self-identified as a snuggery, "a cosy and comfortable place."

Chef Paul Jalaf had an in and out love affair with Providence for many years before settling into Vanity, described by Providence Monthly as "a Vintage-themed supper club and nightlife spot" where he blends contemporary American cuisine with timeless global classics. WESTSIDE TEAM

red julians-logo x112Coming off last year's win at the Jonathan Edwards Winery Culinary Showdown that included Rhode Island and Connecticut chefs, Chef Mike McHugh of Julian's is full of skill and confidence for this city-wide competition. He recently tempted viewer appetites for I HEART PROVIDENCE: East vs West on The Rhode Show with a local ricotta and polenta dumpling dish.

James Mark of North describes himself as a cook, not a chef, even though he was selected as one of only two Rhode Island chefs to be be included in Indie Chefs Week in Austin, Texas last month. We can't describe him any better than he describes himself in a recent article of The EastSide Monthly.

Chef Jon Dille is expanding his Pawtucket-honed vegetarian cooking skills from The Garden Grille to the soon-to-be-open WestSide restaurant of The Grange. The Grange is described as "a community centered, locally sourced, seasonal and 95% plant based concept." Tuesday's debut will be the first glimpse of whether Dille's flavors and recipes change when crossing I-95.
