Sales-driven Hotels
Daniel Edward Craig's articles,
books and blog provide an entertaining insider’s look at issues in the
hotel industry and are considered essential reading for travelers,
hotel employees and hotel management students alike. This month, we
feature a tidbit from his blog regarding sales culture in the hotel
business.
“In the battle for market share, hotel managers with a background in sales have a distinct advantage. For managers
who worked their way up through other departments, keeping the sales
team productive and motivated can be a daunting task. Here are a few
tips for ensuring your property is sales driven from the top down.
Be an advocate. As hotel
manager, you need to support the sales team by educating other
departments on the unique challenges of securing business. Sales people
are demanding and exacting because their clients are, not because they
get a thrill out of seeing operations staff sweat.
Celebrate success. A good hotel
manager engages sales staff, understands their ups and downs, and
acknowledges wins big and small. Drop by the department regularly,
attend sales meetings, and covet your big producers.
Prospect or perish. Prospecting
is like saving money: most people pay expenses first and save what’s
left over: nothing. Save first by making prospecting the number one
priority every day. Rest assured, the other duties will get done.”

May Deadline for Leadership Certificates
eCornell is phasing out the Leading Management Teams and the 4-course Executive Leadership certificates. Although people love them, they are ready for a makeover.
If you are partway through and need to finish either of these
certificates, please contact eCornell to sign up for your remaining
courses before the May 3, 2010 deadline. If timing is an issue, remember that you will have until December to finish these certificates.
Starting May 4, 2010 you can enroll in the new 6-course Executive
Leadership certificate. This certificate will be enhanced with the
addition of two courses: Unlocking your Leadership Potential and Overcoming Challenges to Leaders and Their Teams.
If you’re looking for a leadership program that emphasizes personal
growth and the acquisition of powerful tools for challenge management,
this is it.
If you’re interested in learning more
about this new certificate or how you can enroll in eCornell's last
