Welcome to Well

0317161313d-2 5

Well of Mercy is for adults who need a place just to move apart from their normal life, for a change of pace, to slow down, to make a decision, to grieve a loss, to just be.
                           --Sister Brigid

Recently we were able to refurbish several of our guest rooms with lovely new bedspreads and lamps. Thank you for supporting Well of Mercy and allowing us to improve your experience. We blessed a homeless shelter in Elkin, The Ark, with the spreads removed, making your generous donations reach even further.

We look forward to making further enhancements as we can to enhance your time at Well. Blessings to you and we hope to see you in the very near future.

Guest Reflection
Those of you who have been Well of Mercy guests may recall that each bedroom holds a comment book. In our Reflection for this newsletter we share the following comments from a recent guest:

May the invisible pain and suffering you carry
with you be lifted in the wind in this place
free of judgment and shame.
May the struggle of hopelessness and helplessness wash down the creek with your tears.
May the sun illuminate the darkness and the
moonlight give you new perspective.
May the butterfly’s slow flapping of wings
teach you how to breathe again.
May the lightning bugs teach you to dance again.
May the food and love and smiles and hugs from the
people whose mission is the Well of Mercy
sustain you for the journey.
And, if you’ve come to this place already full of joy,
give thanks.
I give thanks to you for healing the world
with who you are.
Deep peace.

Wisdom Body Wednesday Workshops
Well offers Wisdom Body Workshops to introduce newcomers to Well and to enhance personal growth. Register for the fall afternoon workshops online.  If you wish to stay overnight in conjunction with a workshop, please call the office to reserve a room at (704) 539-5449.

You will make a small, personalized God Box with decorative lid. Write down your worries, anxieties, prayers etc. and place in the God Box to symbolize letting go and trusting God to take care of your problems. Supplies provided but participants may bring their own special papers, symbols, sayings, pictures, etc. to make the box your own. REGISTER!  The cost is $55; lunch is not provided.

Martha Harper is a spiritual director and a book & box artist who lives in Winston-Salem.

The labyrinth holds transformative potential for those open to embarking on the journey.  It offers an experience of the whole body at prayer which can deepen one’s connection with God.

This workshop provides a brief overview of the labyrinth including its history, meaning and use.  Time will be provided for silence, solitude and a communal labyrinth walk. REGISTER!  The cost is $40; lunch is not provided.

Sister Donna holds a MA in Theology from St. Bonaventure University and was trained as a Labyrinth Facilitator by Rev. Lauren Artress, one of the world's leading scholars on the labyrinth.

Peg Cartner

While her husband’s family has 100-year-old roots on land near Well of Mercy, Peg Cartner has followed many different paths toward her role as Spiritual Director at Well.  She first became a guest in 1998, while she worked as a research librarian.

“I was looking for a quiet place to reflect and pray.  The first time I crested the hill on the drive in and saw the place I burst into tears.  It felt like total homecoming!”

While gaining her Spiritual Director credentials, Cartner was led down another new path, one she wasn’t sure of at first.

“I still wasn’t sure this was how God might want me to serve.  But what I found was deep joy and total privilege. In the end I more or less 'surrendered' to the invitation – rather than 'deciding' that this was what I wanted to do,” Cartner explains.

She completed two years of training after participating in a three-year discernment program through her church.  Early in her experience, she spoke with a Spiritual Director who helped to “listen her into her own truth”.  In 2012, she retired from her 30-year career, and was hired at Well as the Spiritual Director and “Minister of Hospitality”.

According to Cartner, “Spiritual direction” is a traditional name for the ancient ministry of mentoring another.  The role of the spiritual director is that of “holy listener” – one who listens prayerfully WITH the seeker for the voice of the Holy in his or her life.  It is the Holy Spirit who is the “director”.

“My passion is learning to be present to – and to encourage – the “God-spark” that dwells at the heart of all of life.  Most often this expresses itself in my loves of gardening, photography, writing and grandchildren!”

Cartner has two grown children and four grandchildren.  She and her husband, Rick, live in Mocksville.
