September 2010

Greetings from the Napa Valley!
This summer is just flying by.  It is already August and that means we are getting ready for harvest.  It has been an unusually cool summer and although it hasn’t been the best for t-shirts, shorts and swimming, it is good for the grapes, allowing for a long and even growing season.  This will be Ren and Marilyn’s 46th harvest so they are well accustomed to the twists and turns of mother nature.

We are right on schedule, however, with our Fall Wine Releases.   The 2007 harvest was classic Napa Valley. Dry, warm days of late summer stretched to October, nicely blurring the line between Summer and Fall.  This provided the vineyard with optimal conditions for slow and even ripening.  Consistent daytime highs in the 80’s allowed the grapes to achieve fully matured tannins, while cool afternoon breezes and evening fog helped retain a balanced natural acidity in the resulting wines.

Winemaker Heidi Barrett’s tasting notes:

2007 Merlot90% Merlot/ 6% Cabernet Sauvignon/2% Cabernet Franc/2% Petit Verdot – 811 cases
A near perfect growing season in 2007 allowed us to make some beautiful wines.  This Merlot has ripe black plum and red cherry-like aromas.  Oak is used only as an accent for the fruit component.  Sweet dense ripe Merlot flavors flow across the mid-palate.  Bright, pure flavor, a fat round middle and intensity of flavor with good length are the characteristics of this tasty Merlot.

2007 Zinfandel: 95% Zinfandel/ 5% Cabernet Franc- 340 cases
Ripe fruit aromas of brambly blackberry, black pepper and briar patch. A bit smoky and earthy as well.  2007 had a long growing season producing wonderfully ripe grapes.  This Zin has a lively bright acid that should age well and go with many types of foods.  Flavors of cherry and dried fruit, with sweet, smoky oak accents in the finish.

2007 Cabernet Franc: 85% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot- 175 cases
Quite deep in color with aromas of ripe blueberry, violets and blueberry with sweet toasty french oak nuances.  On the palate, the flavors are forward with emphasis on a burst of fruit initially, then flowing to a silky mid-palate and moderate length.  Balance is nice, tannins are refined with a lightly dusty impression.  Flavors match the aromas with the blueberry-like fruit and sweet, toasty, cedar and spice components.

Garden Update:  Our lives center on the vines, but our harvests also include produce from our 1-acre organic garden.  A broad selection of fresh vegetables including heirloom tomatoes, various varieties of squash, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, corn.   Our visitors are rewarded with produce to take home and we also regularly donate baskets to our local food bank.

Wine club note, we now have two options for you to choose from: New Release or Cabernet Lovers.  Visit our website at to see the member benefits and review each option.

We would be pleased to have you visit whenever you are in the Napa Valley.   Jennifer Harris is here during the week and we are open on weekends with Greg Harris as your host.  Ren is also frequently here to meet and greet!  Please contact us in advance to make an appointment.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer!
