Dear Colleagues,
Our third and most comprehensive “spotlight” event – FCAA Spotlight: State Budget Cuts, a Funder Briefing in Oakland – is less than a month away! Originally conceived as a regular series to focus on geographic areas of importance to AIDS funders, the overwhelming impact of decreases and cuts for HIV education, prevention and treatment has narrowed boundaries between cities, states and regions and overshadowed any specific geographic focus.
It was essential that we select a location for this event with two stories to tell: one of crisis, and one of response. Oakland and the Greater Bay Area offers the opportunity for a multidimensional case study about the relationship between city, county, and state funding, as well as the role of private and corporate funders. In this issue we’re sharing a few more details on the Spotlight agenda for October 7th – including the exciting news that Oakland’s Mayor Ronald V. Dellums will be joining us in person to share some of the challenges, successes and the inspiration behind Get Screened Oakland – the City of Oakland’s public-private partnership focused on ensuring every Oakland resident knows their HIV status and has access to care.
This e-news also includes our fourth issue of “10 Minutes With...” featuring Tom Viola, Executive Director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, historically one of the leading domestic-focused AIDS funders in the country. BC/EFA shared the great news that they were able to increase funding of vital AIDS services in 2010.
Please, join us in Oakland, and tell your colleagues! Stay tuned for exciting speaker and agenda announcements, and register online HERE. I look forward to seeing you all in October.
Warmest Regards,
John L. Barnes
Executive Director

INCREASES, IMPACT and a TONY: 10 Minutes with...Tom Viola, BC/EFA
In 2009, state budgets across the country were slashed causing devastating cuts to prevention and direct service efforts and creating waiting lists for AIDS drug programs in many states. Against this backdrop, one of the few glimmers of hope has come from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) whose supporters stepped up to the plate to provide welcomed increases in funding to help sustain vital life-supporting programs.
In 22 years, BC/EFA has given more than $53 million to HIV/AIDS and family service organizations through its annual National Grants Program. The program’s three grant-rounds include: #1) Food Service and Meal Delivery Programs; #2) Nationally Recognized Service and Advocacy Organizations; #3) Emergency Assistance, Direct Services, One-Time Expense, Substance Abuse and Harm Reduction Services, and Quality of Life Programs. This ongoing funding support is an essential component of BC/EFA’s commitment to people living with HIV/AIDS, their families and the organizations that serve them. As a grassroots organization, BC/EFA raises funds without relying on an endowment or business-related profit. Those funds are quickly translated into grants for organizations across the country. In this issue of “10 Minutes With…”Tom Viola, Executive Director of BC/EFA shares their recent good giving news, and how they’ve prioritized their funding to sustain impact.
