Completing the Eco Trilogy

Holiday Greetings from Edward Humes

May this holiday season bring you generous helpings of friendship, cheer, luck and great stories - because everyone needs a good story, now more than ever.

My holiday story starts with my next book, Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trashwhich I'm finishing just in time for April publication. I had no idea I had embarked on a trilogy of green-themed books three years ago when I wrote Eco Barons, a tale of environmental philanthropists, activists and visionaries. But their story led to my next eco book, Force of Nature, which delves inside the business world’s green revolution, powered by the unlikely partnership between a tree-hugging river guide and the CEO of the biggest company in the world, Walmart.

And that story, in turn, pointed me to the topic of my upcoming book, Garbology, a journey inside the the secret world of our biggest export, our most prodigious product, and our greatest legacy: our trash. Waste is tied to everything - our economy, energy, air, water, resources. And the craziest part of this story of monumental waste? It just might have a happy ending!  Stay tuned for more Garbology news in the New Year...

Mr. Humes does here what the very best business books do. He finds a good story to help illuminate an issue of surpassing importance.... Mr. Humes’s prose is almost flawless, lean and clear, egoless and spare. He doesn’t deify or demonize Wal-Mart or any of the characters; in fact, he says Wal-Mart’s very business model is probably unsustainable. This is first-rate work — both by the author and by Wal-Mart itself.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas: Give an experience. Here's a list of 12 great ideas from novelist Aimee Liu and other writers on how to give presence instead of presents this year.

On the home front, my holiday story includes two new helpers camped out in my upstairs office during my work day (except when they're prodding me for a walk). Our holiday season has been transformed by the arrival of these two gentle giants, our adopted greyhounds Simon & Pirate, retired racers rescued from abuse. If opening our home to them was a gift, these two goofy, charming hounds have given us much more in return. I am so grateful to Greysave for bringing these fellows home to us.

Thank you all for your support
and interest in my work and my stories. I first knew I wanted to be a writer when I was six, and I'm grateful every day that I've had the opportunity to do the work I love.

Happy holidays to all!
