Pencil Portrait of Bernie Grant in UK Parliament

bernie grant 2

My drawing of one of Britain’s first black MPs, Bernie Grant (1944-2000), was unveiled in UK Parliament on 5th December 2017.

A former Labour Member of Parliament for Tottenham. He was a true champion for social and racial justice, and pioneer for equality and diversity. It was my greatest honour to draw this man.
It is a blessing to know that this drawing has permanently joined the Parliamentary Art Collection. And even more surreal of a blessing knowing that it is the first ever pencil portrait commissioned by the House of Commons and currently the only pencil portrait in their collection.

It’s quite unbelievable how the humble instrument I fell in love with at 8 years of age has enabled me in countless ways in this journey through life and has now made a little mark in history.

Unveiled by Labour Party Leader, Jeremy Corbyn
