Oppenheimer Forecasts Market for Antenna Tuning to Reach 1B USD by 2016

Oppenheimer Equity Research has released the LTEvolution report that explores existing and emerging semiconductor opportunities in the evolving LTE market space.
   Starting with describing the evolution of mobile communication standards and mobile communication networks and how they have evolved from 2G to 3G and now LTE, the report then goes on to discuss the opportunities and challenges that comes with multiband LTE deployments with carrier aggregation (CA). The report also  discusses new applications and technologies such as Antenna Tuning and Envelope Tracking and features a section on WiSpry and RF-MEMS technology. The report is a good read and Oppenheimer predicts rapidly increasing attach rates for Antenna Tuners in smartphones and forecasts this the market segment to reach 1 Billion USD for year 2016.

Antenna Tuning in Band IVBand4picture 2

When we talk with customers we often get asked about how a tuner can help with tuning in band IV and other bands that have an large duplex distance. Band IV has the uplink at 1700 MHz but the downlink is located at  2100 MHz, more than 400 MHz away. Clearly this is not a case where a single resonance can cover both Tx and Rx and at the same time. 
    In this application example video the WS2018 antenna tuner is used to create a dual resonance tuning setting that provides excellent match for both Tx/Uplink and Rx/Downlink at the same time. Both resonances are individually tunable. The concept works also when compensating for external loading effects so that it can be used in a closed loop control scheme. Another excellent example on how Tunable RF can help you build an antenna solution with superior accessible bandwidth and flexibility.

Double Power Savings with WiSpry Tunable RF Devices

You probably already know that with a correctly tuned and centered antenna impedance you are saving valuable power and such savings translate into longer battery life and happier customers.
But did you know that WiSpry devices themselves also are absolute power savers? Not only in active mode but there is also a standy mode that can be used to further reduce the power consumption during idle periods. Best of all, thanks to digital electrostatic control, supply current stays low independent of device activity level and there are no bias currents or external analog voltages required to operate the device, just a low voltage power supply and a serial interface.

Co-Existence Filtering Magic Trick

Just as WiSpry Tunable RF circuits are used for tuning antennas, they can also be used to build super compact Tunable RF filters. Not only does this allow the filter response be shifted up and down in frequency, it is also possible to turn the filter off completely and avoid the insertion loss when there is no interference present. This set of abilities makes the filters perfectly suitable for co-existence application where they can help significantly increase the isolation between separate radio systems.

WiSpry Antenna Tuners in Austin at NI Week 2013

NI Week is a developer event that National Instruments is hosting once a year to showcase new products and allow engineers that work with NI products to network and learn.

The August 2013 event set an all time attendace record with close to 4000 technology enthusiasts, professors, students and professionals coming to see the latest in measurements and measurement automation. 
WiSpry teamed up with the great people in at NI to produce a demo that can showcase the speed and versatility of NII's PXI VNA product line while at the same time show the RF tuning performance inherent in WiSpry devices.

Measuring the WS2018 with NI 5632 PXI VNA
