Lyme Academy College of Fine Art 40th Anniversary

Limited Edition Reproductions to Benefit Scholarship FundDrawing of the Sill House, Lyme Academy College

In honor of the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art's
40th anniversary year, Catherine Christiano's studio will be offering beautiful, archival limited edition reproductions. The drawings for these reproductions, now in the college's permanent collection, were commissioned years ago to commemorate the accreditation of the Lyme Academy as a BFA degree granting college. The education offered by this unique, very small fine arts college is focused on the history
and tradition of representational art, centered on the study
Drawing of Chandler Center, Lyme Academy College
of nature and the figure. Over the past forty
years, Elisabeth Gordon Chandler's figurative academy that began in the lower level studio of the Lyme Art Association has transitioned to become what is now a gem of a College of the University of New Haven.

Limited Edition Reproductions Available at:

Onlooker - Artist's Statement

The painting Onlooker is a continuation of my exploration of ideas relating to spectatorship. The garden in this painting, like all gardens, was created for our visual delight and, as a viewer of the artwork, we expect to enjoy its pleasures without restriction. However, within this garden our gaze is met by that of the artist. It is a self-portrait that has been clearly crafted, like most portraits (and like many gardens), for the gaze of the public. As viewers of art or gardens we assume that we have unlimited access to gaze upon them, yet we may not expect to be confronted with our own action. Here, in Onlooker, our presence is implied by the pose of the artist, who during the course of her work looks directly out at the viewer. The viewer's role is ambiguous but is clearly a part of the painting. Likewise, the artist's image is equally ambiguous. What is the subject of this painting? Is it about the artist, the viewer, the garden, or perhaps our roles as onlookers or recorders and interpreters of the visual world?
