Creating a Strong Neighborhood

Dear PUSH Members & Neighbors,

These past months we’ve made some forward progress on saving an old, unoccupied school in our neighborhood, we continued the fight to get more control over our utility bills, and we’ve started planning some future community events and road trips, read on for more details.

School 77 Community Workshop

We've been working on facilitating a community redevelopment plan for the former Buffalo public school 77 building located on Normal Avenue in Buffalo's west side neighborhood. The building has been sitting idle for years and we’ve been bringing the community together to make it a community resource again. We hosted a community workshop about it on Wednesday August 19th at 161 Vermont St, Buffalo NY. We gave the public an update on where we are in this process. If you have memories of what school 77 was like and would like to get involved in the campaign, call 716-884-0356 and let us know.

September Actions on Energy Democracy

affordability wrkshop 2015 037

As part of a state wide effort for the public to get more control over their energy bills, we helped organized a public information and comment session in various cities throughout New York State, with a stop in Buffalo NY on changes that were legally happening on our utility bills. We knew that many people were unaware that this was happening, so we put together a couple of neighborhood workshops on telling our stories of energy affordability as preparation leading up to the session in Buffalo.

Public Statement Hearings 2015 022

The session happened in late September and we were able to get the communities story out to state energy regulators that more needs to be done to bring some control over the types of energy we use and how much this energy costs us.

Post Your Comment on Energy Affordability Today

Although state utility regulators came to Buffalo and are going around to other areas of the state, the battle is still not over.

We are living an energy affordability crisis in New York and the Public Service Commission (PSC) needs to hear what you have to say about Energy Affordability!   The PSC is in the process of developing a statewide Affordability Program for Low income households.  However the program will only reach a tiny percent of the population that is low income.  The PSC needs to hear your voice on what a real program for Energy Affordability would look like, please make a public comment on their website.
