Creating a Strong Neighborhood

Dear PUSH Members & Neighbors,

This past month was filled with excitement and action, like the recent announcement from Key Bank which will be a benefit to the community. There are also many things coming within the next few weeks like a big tenant advocate outreach event, our next Community Building (PUSH events) meeting, and our next monthly meeting. Read on for details.

PUSH Monthly Meeting, April & May 2016

At the last monthly meeting we talked about the recent announcement from Key Bank and how this could be very impactful for our neighborhoods. We talked about the work it took through community organizing to get to this point. This month we'll discuss more about this and what we can do as a community to make sure this announcement has a lasting impact. There's a section in this edition of the PUSH News that gives more details on this announcement. Do you want to be a member of PUSH Buffalo? It costs just $5, and you can sign up at this meeting which starts at 3pm and happens Saturday April 16th at The Grant St Neighborhood Center, 271 Grant St. The May monthly meeting happens on Saturday May 21st starting at 3pm at the same location. We hope to see you there.

PUSH Buffalo visits Cincinnati Ohio

"Lonnie Barlow, Eddie “Ice Cream” Jones and I took the show on the road to Cincinnati last week for a brief visit hosted graciously by the Peter Moorhouse, Sustainability Coordinator at the University of Cincinnati, and Dean Niemeyer, Principal Planner of Hamilton County. The three of us came to Ohio’s “Queen City” with some personal ties: Eddie was born in Cincy and has lots of family ties there, Lonnie cut his teeth as an emerging organizer with the AMOS project in the city and I’ve made many trips to visit my grandma, who passed away at the age of 99 last year, and other family there over the decades.

The most memorable exchange at the university session came when an audience member asked us to summarize PUSH’s work in one word. Without skipping a beat, Eddie answered “self-sufficiency” and gave his take on how gaining control over the real estate development process, energy distribution, food and water management can build the spiritual power of a community."

This excerpt was taken from PUSH's executive director (Aaron Bartley) most recent blog post. We also visited Xavier University and Cincinnati Communities United for Action during this trip.

Announcement of Cross Roads Coalition

There was announcement recently about the Cross Roads coalition a new coalition of groups including PUSH Buffalo that will be working together to further the creation of the green economy at the local level. Community Conversation on Climate Change & Economic Justice

Earth Day climate justice event flier_final

With climate change creating disparate impacts in communities across New York, key sectors of our economy are transitioning away from dirty and dangerous fuels like coal, natural gas, and nuclear to renewable energy sources like wind and solar. This transition is creating new opportunities and challenges for local community and government leaders interested in promoting equitable and sustainable reinvestment and good jobs in our region. PUSH Buffalo, Open Buffalo, the Climate Justice Coalition of WNY, and NY Renews are excited to host NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for a community conversation around climate change and economic justice. Following remarks by the Attorney General, representatives from Erie County government, the Buffalo Common Council, and the host organizations will engage one another and community members in a conversation around local strategies and solutions to the twin crises of climate change and economic inequality. The program will conclude with calls to action around several statewide climate and energy democracy related initiatives, including efforts by the NY Renews coalition to build a climate justice movement in NYS.

This event is open to the public, so please spread the word across your networks and with your constituents!

PUSH Green featured in the News

Are you noticing that your utility bills are a little too high now that the weather dropped to what we're used to here in the Buffalo winter months? Give us a call at 716-886-1780 and have a PUSH Green Energy Advocate help you determine what you can do to make your home or business warmer and, ultimately, cost less.

We were so happy to bring PhotoGraphics 2 owner Don Zinteck a check for the work he's had done to his building in the Elmwood Village neighborhood in Buffalo! Don has done his part to save money, help the environment, and bring a little more value to his building.

Want to learn how to make a similar investment? We can help! Contact Samantha at 716-886-1780 to learn more about this program.
