Teachers address advancing teaching profession

More than 50 teacher leaders and organization representatives from across the country spoke on the importance of recruiting, preparing, activating, and supporting the next generation of teachers to lead a transformed teaching profession. The Teacher Leadership Initiative (TLI) partners hosted an event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. focused on Advancing the Profession: Examining the Outcomes of the TLI.

Channel your inner teacher leader
“Because of my leading from the classroom, but not leaving the classroom, I have been able to bring to scale a model that allows a new cohort of teachers to collaborate and share best practices," Ben Owens writes in his CTQ blog post, Channeling Your Inner Teacher Leader. Ben, who spent 20 years as a corporate engineer, now teaches physics and mathematics at Tri-County Early College High School in Murphy, NC.

Personalized learning for teachers

According to a survey conducted by Grunwald Associates and Digital Promise, while more than 84 percent of teachers participate in in-service days, only 20 percent report being satisfied with them. Teachers feel positive about the practical skills and growth they get from professional development but aren't always presented with opportunities for personalized learning. CTQ is working to develop micro-credentials, which allow teachers to take part in individualized, differentiated instruction that align with their passions and needs.

Much more than "just a teacher"
"In the end, we know that our structure puts students first and has greater impact on student learning and engagement," Kim Ursetta writes in her blog post "Just a Teacher...." Kim, who is an Ambassador for the Teacher-Powered Schools Initiative, shares how members of the teacher team at teacher-powered Math and Science Leadership Academy (MSLA) in Denver are far from being "just teachers."
