Urge Members of Congress to Support the National Endowment for the Arts
Americans for the Arts recently reported that the U.S. House of Representatives Interior Appropriations Subcommittee
approved a FY 2014 funding bill that calls for a 49% cut to the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This would bring funding of the NEA down to $75
million, a level not seen since 1974. The NEA funds grants in every
congressional district in the country. A cut of this size would immediately end
that ability to support the arts in all communities. The NEA supports funding
in dance, design, folk & traditional arts, literature, local arts agencies,
media arts, multidisciplinary, museums, music, musical theater, opera,
presenting, theater, and visual arts.
Please take a few
minutes to write to your Members of Congress to urge them to support the NEA in
widening citizen access to the cultural, educational, and economic benefits of
the arts, and advancing creativity and innovation in communities across the
United States.
With members of
Congress on both sides of the aisle unhappy with the broad Interior funding
package, the bill may undergo significant changes when considered by the full
House Appropriations committee as early as this week. From there, further
action on the entire Interior bill is highly unpredictable. Time is quickly
running out for the House and Senate to complete appropriations bills before
the fiscal year ends on September 30. Even if the Interior bill doesn’t
ultimately see its way to completion, both the House and Senate will soon begin
negotiating on all final FY14 funding decisions.
This is a critical moment to
speak up in support of public funding for the arts! Go on record urging
your members of Congress to support the NEA.
