Letter from the President
Dear friends,

New Year 2016 is almost here, which means there’s only a short time left to make use of end of year tax benefits. During the next few days many people will make donations to their favorite charities, not only to support the causes they believe in but also to reduce their taxable income.

That’s why we’re getting in touch - to let you know that now is the time to pay in advance for children you already support, to increase the number of children you support or to donate to any of our humanitarian causes you feel are close to your heart.

This is also a good time for us to look back at what we accomplished in 2015.

In the past year, the number of children supported by Child Foundation exceeded 7,800. Among them, 272 were able to pass university entrance exams and began their higher education. The number of  pupils attending Varzaghan School – built by Child Foundation with your generous donations after the Azerbaijan earthquake – increased by 30%. We also started building a dormitory next door to the school, for children who would otherwise have to make a difficult daily journey along dangerous mountain roads.

We are also helping children affected by the Nepal earthquake by contributing to the construction of a school in Kathmandu and working with a local NGO to sponsor some pupils’ attendance.

Our office in Afghanistan helped families in the immediate aftermath of October’s earthquake. Our staff and volunteers also provided food packages and blankets to a large number of refugees from the Afghan city of Kunduz, who were forced to flee during a Taliban attack. These activities are in addition to our regular food distribution programs, which provide support for more than 1,000 families. This year, we also distributed more than 1,100 Backpacks of Hope to schoolchildren at the start of term.

In 2015, Child Foundation helped many children with medical needs, children like Fatemeh in Afghanistan who needed a hearing aid implanted, or Rana and her sister, Nazanin, who were victims of a cruel acid attack. We also organized the collection of blood from more than 1,000 donors in Mazar-e-Sharif to help children with thalassemia.

Child Foundation offices in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland acted fast to help Syrian refugees by providing many of them with food and warm clothing, and our Los Angeles office continues to collect new clothes for them. Our work with refugees is not limited to those from Syria. We also helped a group of Pakistani refugees who live on the outskirts of Tehran.

In 2015, Child Foundation increased its activities at an international level by attending United Nations and UNICEF meetings in New York and Geneva, presenting position papers on the rights of children and the use of education as a human rights tool. We discussed the challenges of helping children in countries such as Afghanistan and Iran, and suggested ways of delivering our services to those who need us most.

Being granted a special license from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control provided a welcome boost to Child Foundation’s activities. The license allows us to send up to $2 million to Iran every year and is the largest granted to any non-profit organization working in that country. Our transparent financial dealings reassured US government inspectors that our work in Iran was entirely humanitarian in nature. Meanwhile, other nonprofit watchdogs, such as Charity Navigator, GuideStar, International Charities of America and Charities Without Borders, after conducting detailed studies of our accounting and managerial methods, awarded us their highest ratings.

These great achievements are entirely due to the kindness, trust and generosity of our donors. That’s why, in these last days of 2015, we’re asking you to help us once more by donating to our humanitarian programs. Please help us to help more children in need.

We thank you and wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Pakistani Refugees - Update

Remember the refugees we informed you about earlier this month? We had reported that they would need additional help for the coming seasons, and with your help, we were able to provide them with food and clothing to keep them warm for the winter.

We would like to extend our thanks to all of our donors who contributed to this worthy cause.

Check out the photos here, and if you would like to donate to our refugee fund, please give here.

The mission of Child Foundation is to help children in need, who have been identified as high achievers to remain in school. We believe that education can move a child beyond the stigma of poverty and give that child the tools to reach his or her true and full potential. Since our inception in 1994, Child Foundation has provided basic necessities to children living in poverty or hardship, enhancing the quality of life for these children as well as their respective families. By providing access to education, Child Foundation hopes to eliminate children prematurely leaving school, and in certain cases, avoid early matrimony.
