EMBARQ has helped to model global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport sector up to the year 2050 as part of the 2050 Global Calculator tool. The newly launched interactive Global Calculator aims to be the most open-source model of the world’s energy, land, and food systems. The tool, which is currently open to the public in draft format, is designed to help policymakers understand how we can meet the world’s food and energy needs while minimizing contributions to global climate change.

EMBARQ Brasil has partnered with Joinville, the most populous city in the southern state of Santa Catarina, to help craft the city’s strategy for people-oriented, sustainable mobility. EMBARQ Brasil has hosted two workshops to help Joinville increase public participation in the planning process and improve a project to expand its bus corridors, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian spaces. With the help of EMBARQ Brasil, Joinville is creating transport systems that meet the needs of all residents, improving quality of life and building a city for people, not cars.

Adverse impacts from the growing urban transport sector in Beijing are looming large. Promoting economic growth through sustainable urbanization, meanwhile, is a huge opportunity for city leaders, and one in which sustainable transport plays an important role. This was the focus of the recent “Workshop on Sustainable Development of Transportation at the Background of Air Pollution Control,” which served as a platform for Chinese city leaders and international experts to exchange knowledge and best practices on reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

Scaling up the Raahgiri movement to the nation’s capital and largest city is a huge leap, one that reminds us that reorienting cities around people – not cars – is achievable.

Mexico City inaugurated a new mobility this month, which prioritizes bicycling, walking, and sustainable public transport in the creation of a new mobility hierarchy for the city. The law declares the “right to mobility,” placing people at the center of transport planning and urban development. To meet this ambitious promise, Mexico City’s leaders are taking a holistic approach to changing the city’s mobility systems, incorporating principles of urban resilience, inclusive governance, and active transport.

As part of what’s been dubbed the “RS10” initiative, EMBARQ Turkey is implementing a series of Road Safety Laboratory (RSLab) projects in five Turkish cities, with the goal to raise awareness of road safety issues, build capacity to reduce traffic crashes, analyze accident-prone areas, and provide lifesaving interventions. Based on its leadership improving road safety in Turkey, EMBARQ Turkey was appointed Coordinator for Urban Planning and Transport on Turkey’s Traffic Safety Platform. In this role, EMBARQ Turkey is helping advance Prime Minister R. Tayyip Erdoğan’s plan to reduce traffic fatalities by 50% by 2020.
