From Our Director: Rio+20 in the Rear View
As we look to make sense of the Rio+20 conference that concluded last week, we can confidently say that transportation drove its way to the top of the sustainable development agenda. It’s a far departure from the last global development conference 10 years ago in Johannesburg, when transportation was conspicuously absent from the agenda and the resulting Millennium Development Goals. After the Rio+20 conference last week, transportation is now poised to become a significant part of the forthcoming Sustainable Development Goals, which are beginning to take shape as one of the conference’s major outcomes. Sustainable Urban Transport Saves Lives
Chaired by EMBARQ Director Holger Dalkmann, the event "Sustainable Urban Transport Saves Lives" brought together technicians, researchers and experts in road safety on June 20 at the headquarters of Rio Ônibus in Rio de Janeiro. Organized by EMBARQ, FETRANSPOR and the Latin American Association of Integrated Systems and BRT (SIBRT), the meeting was held in parallel to the Rio+20 Conference in order to exchange information and discuss best practices to reduce the number of traffic crashes and traffic deaths. Mayor Bloomberg Praises "Evolution" of Rio de Janeiro
After coordinating the meeting of the C40 Climate Leadership Group and visiting the Morro da Babilônia favela, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg met officials at the Rio Operations Center on Tuesday afternoon. "I was in Rio 20 years ago and I can see the differences, primarily in the actions of people. The city has evolved. I saw many smiles around here. I think the locals are following the right path toward sustainability," Bloomberg said. (read more)
