Dear Preserve Calavera Supporter

Our Land Acquisition Campaign is Underway!

IMG_4585
Since launching our campaign last month we have another generous donor who has stepped forward to pledge $5k in matching funds.  We have now raised $1,454 toward our $30k goal !!!   With your help these critical local dollars can help us leverage other grants, state and federal funds which make it possible to buy and permanently protect some of our priceless natural lands.

Today we still have land that hasn't been destroyed by development- open space land where we can smell the sage and hear the call of birds and feel connected to this wonderful area we live in.

Please make a tax deductible donation here today - before the bulldozers are on the next hillside.  Note that it is for the Rosebrook Land Acquisition Fund. Donations of any amount will be matched up to $15k - so your gift will be doubled!

For more information and to help us spread the word please see this flyer.  Please help us make this investment- for us, and for future generations.

California Naturalist 2017

Our naturalists in training are close to completing this 10-week long certification course.  Expert speakers have shared their knowledge on our local bioregion, covering biodiversity, habitats, geology, water, botany and resource management.  Students have visited local reserves and conducted water quality tests and soil analyses.  They have honed journaling skills and contributed citizen science observations to our class project.  Our enthusiastic trainees will be a great addition to our local conservation community!

Preserve Calavera supports the UC California Naturalist Program, (this is the second annual California Natiuralist Program sponsored by Preserve Calavera).  This program is designed to introduce Californians to the wonders of our unique ecology and engage the public in study and stewardship of California’s natural communities.

For more information about the California Naturalist Program, see http://calnat.ucanr.edu/About_the_program/

Official California State Bat - the Pallid Bat

There is a movement afoot by bat biologists and advocates to get the pallid bat named the Official State Bat of California! State Senator Bill Dodd has agreed to initiate the process. A key factor for the process is public support, so write a letter of support for one of our most under-appreciated species.

Bats in general provide ecosystem services that are beneficial to all of us...from pollination to pest control. Here are links to more info about the amazing Pallid Bat…

Long-tailed Weasel - Mustela frenata

This efficient little predator, weighing in at less than a pound, can take down prey twice its size. The long body and short legs allow for hunting in tight places; under logs, in cavities and tunnels. They are also good climbers and swimmers.
When moving in the open, weasels bound and careen with high energy-zipping along at break neck speed.
Solitary and secretive, the long-tailed weasel is rarely seen, but if you are lucky enough to spot one, it is a great delight to watch. A recent sighting was on the bluff at the beach.
