Use a quick “5-4-3-2-1” trick to work your way through your five senses:  Name five things you can see right now…then four things you can hear…three things you can touch…two things you can smell…and one thing you can taste, such as the taste of your own mouth. Give or Get a Hug:
It’s not uncommon to feel a little down during the holidays, but there’s a quick fix: hug someone you care about, even an animal. Scientists have found that hugging releases oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, while also decreasing levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Boost Your Memory by Shutting Your Eyes:

Researchers asked participants questions about a short film they had been shown. Participants who shut their eyes while being asked the questions gave 23% more correct answers than those who kept their eyes open. Theory: closing your eyes blocks out distractions and reduces your brain’s cognition load, which helps you remember more. (Published in Legal and Criminological Psychology)

Soothe Stress with Holy Basil: Holy Basil is different from the basil you’re normally accustomed to. This plant, also known as Tulsi, is revered in the medical tradition of India. In a medical study, people who took Holy Basil extract daily for 6 weeks experienced significant improvement in stress-related symptoms such as forgetfulness, insomnia, and exhaustion. Overall, it was found to be 39% more effective than a placebo.

Letter from the Executive Director

Hi Everyone,

Several years ago while training for a 3-day 60-mile walk, I commented to my sister how beautiful some flowers were in front of a house as we kept on walking. Suddenly, we heard an elderly gentleman shout out, “STOP and smell the roses!” And that’s exactly what we did. We began to realize the true beauty of the flowers as their gentle soft fragrance filled our spirits. I was so grateful to him for reminding me to stop and appreciate life’s gifts. 

No matter what our challenges are, there are so many lessons and gifts being offered to us daily. We need to remember to take a moment to open our eyes and our hearts and to receive. 

I now want to take a moment to acknowledge all of you. My life has more meaning to it because you are walking alongside me in this journey called life. I am so grateful for your love and light! I wish I was able to give each and every one of you a big hug, and express my deepest gratitude for who you are. 

Be grateful for what you have, and you’ll end up having more…
