Staff Appreciation BBQ Thank You

On October 16th, Santa Cruz State Parks staff & Friends staff were treated to a feast of epic proportions by the Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks Board Members!

The ramada out at New Brighton State Beach was overflowing with tasty treats hot off the grill, salads, and cakes. We were all feeling VERY appreciated (and like we should have worn larger pants). To add to a perfect afternoon, whales and a pod of dolphins were spotted hunting just off the coast while the party was in full swing. What an amazing day!

Thank you very much to our incredible board here at Friends who not only make us feel so appreciated, but who give their precious time and talents throughout the year to help us achieve our goals of preserving and protecting our wonderful Santa Cruz State Parks and Beaches.

Wilder Heritage Harvest was Good Ol' Fashioned Fun for the WHOLE family!

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the beautiful day with us at the Wilder Ranch State Park Heritage Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 19th. We hope you got a chance to pop by our Friends booth and say hello!

Guests were treated to a whole host of exciting and interactive activities for the whole family: draft horse rides, apple tasting, delicious baked goods, pumpkin painting, a vintage clothing exhibit and demonstration…the list goes on!

A beautiful quilt by Georgia Randle was raffled off to benefit the Wilder Ranch Farm Animal Program, and a triangle forged in the Wilder blacksmith shop was won by Mike & Amy Heckel (pictured above).

Thanks to all the interpreters, docents and volunteers whose hard work and dedication made this wonderful event possible.

Painting Parks for a Cause

Santa Cruz is well known for our talented artists, and Friends is honored that members of the Santa Cruz Oil Painters are donating a portion of their painting sales to help support local State Parks and Beaches!

Local artist Michele Hausman kindly donated 20% of the proceeds of her Paint the Parks painting "Ocean Retreat" (pictured above) to Friends. Paint The Parks was born out of artist Karin Leonard's "profound passion for painting and lifelong love of nature" and desire to help protect that from which she draws so much inspiration (Leonard pictured below painting in Big Sur).

She invited other artists to join her in appreciation and generosity: to participate in Paint the Parks, the artist must paint a State Park or Beach that they have been to and donate at least 10% of the proceeds to the association supporting that State Park or Beach.

Other Santa Cruz Oil Painters members Coraly Hanson and Marnie Dufau previously donated proceeds of their paintings from the "Painting Our Parks" series exhibit which featured 14 artists and over 100 paintings of County, State and National Parks and Beaches in California.

The exhibit was hosted by the Santa Cruz County Bank Art Collaborative from October 2012 until January of this year and some paintings are still available.

Paint the Parks has generously added us to the "donate" section of their website. Check it out here!

Año Nuevo Boardwalk Dedication

On October 27th, Coastside State Parks Association and Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks celebrated the grand re-opening of the equal access boardwalk at Año Nuevo State Park!

Cecily Harris, Executive Director of Coastside State Parks Association, Jim Mazzone, Volunteer Crew Chief and Supervising Ranger Kiser at the entrance to the new boardwalk

The newly reconstructed and improved boardwalk will ensure that guests who use wheelchairs or strollers have the opportunity to see the Elephant Seals on an all-weather, fully-accessible trail. Coastside, Friends and the California State Parks Foundation joined forces to provide for the construction. Friends is proud to have donated over $19,600 to this amazing project.

The park is a major gathering area for northern elephant seals, which may be seen year-round. The males battle for mates on the beaches. The females give birth to their young on the dunes. During the breeding season, December 15 through March 31, daily access to the park is available via guided walks, which can be booked online in advance, with a few slots available on a first-come-first-served basis on the day of your visit by checking in at the visitor center.
